Do you listen to music when you ride?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why would it be more dangerous than listening to music in your car?

So, no distractions for me. This sport is dangerous enough already.
So basicly ... she didn't LOOK and she didn't SEE the car coming.
Hearing has little to do with it.
Do you hear other cars coming when driving your car?

I listen to music almost every (solo) ride, usually loud enough to drown out mostly everything else as well. Never has it been an issue because I ride predictably, and visually inspect my surroundings.
Also, riding with music doesn't mean I can't choose to take out an earbud.
If traffic is heavy when riding through the tricky 4 miles or so out of the downtown area, I'll lower the volume and take out the left one, though there are times where I'll just blast it any ways. I act no differently in either situation or feel less or more safe.
If I see animals up ahead that I want to hear, I'll take out an earbud.

There are two benefits that I get from listening to music while riding:
1. Maintaining as much intensity during my ride as possible. Listening to high-tempo exciting music does this for me. Sometimes I like throwing in a few sprints into my ride and I'll time them along with music so that I can "go all out" without having someone to compete against. (Try to NOT go into a sprint while listening to the intro of "Can't Stop" climaxing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfOdWSiyWoc)
Also, Velobeats is amazing to listen to during a ride: https://www.velobeats.braynardwebdev.com/ High tempo music mixed in with cycling commentary and interview clips.

2. Not hearing shouts from cars. If there's something I need warning of, drivers will honk and I'll hear that, everything else is best not to be heard at all so it doesn't distract or annoy me.

I didn't read the first 7 pages of this thread, so just yell at me if this has been addressed before.

Does anyone have any experience with One Good Earbud? I've always ridden without music but sometimes long solo rides can become a bit boring.

Thank god I am not my kids. No I would not, but then their experience cycling is very limited comparatively. 20-30 % of my rides are with music. It has never been a safety issue for me. I do it to break up the pace. Generally I like the quiet with cycling but there are times I love riding with tunes. Like Zei, I ALWAYS visually inspect TWICE before any moves on the road.

No.

They don't have enough experience to do it safely.

If you read back a few pages to where we were talking about anticipation and avoidance (which is what was getting interesting in this thread) then experience is key.

Some evidence that riding with 1 bud actually is more damaging to the ears.

I don't ride with music because it reduces my situational awareness and focus. I want to hear everything around me, because I do need to interact with the environment, rather than just react to what's happening when it happens. Besides that, it's too easy to get sucked into the music and let my attention drift. I'm a little ADD that way...

There's no question that riding is a complex info processing event. And, there are times when we have to process info, make decisions, and act pretty quickly. Depending on the ride, that can be an infrequent event, or almost constantly. The MUPS are one of the worst places for that, IMO, and the place I see the most people using earphones.

It's just not worth it to me to increase my risk for problems due to impaired decision making. And the kids? Forget it. They have the attention span of Robin Williams on a coke binge...

I also think my day-to-day life is pretty over-stimulated and appreciate the break I get from the constant barrage of information when I ride my bike.

There are times I can go for hours without seeing another human being; in a car, on a bike, walking, or other. These times are not complex info processing events. It's these times I sometimes wish I had music. Not when I'm on the MUP or roads with traffic.
