Heart Rate Monitor Affected By Jerseys?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Heart Rate Monitor Affected By Jerseys?

I'm using a Bontrager HRM with a Garimin Edge 500, and the two work well together, but like most folks, I occasionally have trouble with the monitor giving erroneously high HR's, especially when I first start a ride. The usual solution to this is to moisten the pads on the HRM strap, and using a saline solution to do so completely eliminates the problem. Except... With certain jerseys, I have this problem no matter what. The issue is most notable with my Gore jerseys, and it's also an issue with some of my PI jerseys. On the other hand, I have no trouble whatsoever with my Capo stuff.

Has any one else experienced this? If so, have you found a cause &/or a solution?

Thanks,
Bert

My looser jerseys do this. I think it has to do with flapping of the nylon fabric creating an electromagnetic field.

Yes, I used to suffer it with some of my old jerseys.

They sell a anti-static spray at WalMart that stopped my HR meter from readin outrageous values. If I recall correctly it was made by Scotch or 3M.

I've also heard that rubbing your jersey with a dryer sheet can help with this as it has anti-static properties or something along those lines

Yep, I've got a Bontrager, and I have one jeresy that does this as well, worse when it's cold.

I get this in the first 10-15 min with a couple of looser jerseys I have. My HR will jump up to 200 when I'm warming up. Tighter jerseys don't seem to have the issue. I notice it but don't care. I'm not sure why I bother recording HR since I have a powermeter but it's an old habit.

Thanks for the input. I'm glad to know others have seen the same phenomenon. It's not a big deal, but it does seem weird. Two of the jerseys this happens with are on the loose side, but one that's pretty snug still gives me the same high HR's. I'll try the try the anti-static spray. Again, thanks...

I haven't noticed this effect with my Garmin HRM.

Recording power is the best way to measure output is consistent and meeting what you're looking for.
Recording HR is the best way to see how your body is responding to the power you're putting out.

You might average 200w on one ride with a 150bpm average HR. The next time you do the same ride you should note the differences.
If you average the same power but HR is significantly higher or lower it might indicate better fitness or overtraining, etc. Best not throw away the HRM.
