No maps for me: "There was a problem communicsaating with the Garmin device."

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My girlfriend got me a copy of the western 24 K topo maps. I tried to load them on the unit, but keep getting this error in Base Camp. Has anyone else seen this? I just updated the firmware, but still get the same message. When I plug the USB cable into the computer, it charges, and it exposes a mass storage device ... so it's communicating with the PC ok.

But do your post-it notes say "AUTO PAUSE" when you're going down a hill at 35 mph?

What Garmin unit do you have? With my 705 I had to use the Mapsource program to select maps to put on the micro SD card.

Do you have a GPX file you are trying to put on the Garmin? You can browse the folders and manually drag and drop it in.

I have a CD or DVD with the Garmin maps ... I installed it on her laptop and wound up with Base Camp. So I'm trying to use that to put some of the map data on the Edge unit. I can browse the files on the Edge when I connect it by USB - that's how I get my ride data off the unit, and up to Garmin Connect and into other mapping programs. But, as far as I know, I don't have a gpx file to move to the unit ... I think I'm supposed to make a selection against the map in Base Camp and then export it to the device. I'm not 100 % clear on that part, mostly because I get this error message every time I try to make it happen.

ah, ok, you are talking about base maps - I was thinking you had a map or gps file for a specific ride you wanted to do.

I dont know much about adding base maps. Have you checked the Garmin forums? They seem pretty active.

I haven't actually been to the Garmin forum before, but thanks for the suggestion.

I hope this thing isn't defective. It goes into auto pause a lot, too.
