$1,193 postage to Australia for a frame??!! (Ebay shipping calculator)

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That's from LA to Melbourne, Aus.

That's a mistake, right? I tried contacting the seller, but it seems though he's too 'big' to take common questions from Joe Averageses.

A friend of mine is checking out this frame.

Maybe this is the Gods telling you to look elsewhere?

It's probably some odd auto-calculate thing giving the worst possible answer, but frames are always going to be expensive for the 'common man' to ship.

Not surprised. It's roughly $300-$600 for me to ship wheelsets there....therefore no PSIMET wheels in Australia. I will figure it out someday but have had no luck as of yet.

These are the rules to australia...

Maximum length: 46 inches
Maximum width: 35 inches
Maximum height: 46 inches
Maximum length and girth combined: 108 inches

U can send a bike frame between those sizes, what u have to do is to cut the box to start with or find a frame box. As for pricing for 20 pounds is like 150 bucks in the tables, what u have to do is to go the postal office and do the calculations in there because even the web site doesnt allow you to do calculations with stuff larger than 30 inches or so. As long the rules allow you to send it you are ok, some countries u cant send stuff bigger than a shoe box. Go to the postal office and ask, take the measures of the box with u too.

A couple of months ago I sold a frame on ebay to an Australian buyer. Looking around for a decent shipping cost, a website called Bikeflights was about $400 to ship FedEx from Colorado to Sydney. I had the buyer purchase the shipping through that site himself and he forwarded me the .pdf shipping label and I just dropped the box off at FedEx. He got it a week later and everyone was happy.

Has to go Express Service and the 3 majors, USPS, Fedex and UPS are way too expensive. Even with a box under 108 inches, it's still going be $4-500.

Check out IPS Shipping - www.ipsparcel.com/ - they are a huge shipper and use DHL to Australia, passing their savings on to you. Will still be $350-$400 but it will get there in 3-5 days safely. I've used them 5-6 times.

I wouldn't be surprised. I was getting quotes of $500-$700 to ship an electric guitar from Canada to Australia.

For an over size box the shipper has to buy space on the plane. This drives the price way up. Look at the price of a ticket to Australia.

Thanks for the replies. WOW! There are some relative horror stories on here.
I was expected you all to say that it's rubbish, and that it should be no more than $250.

The frustrating thing is, is that it usually costs no more than 20 bucks for small stuff to be sent here from the UK. And at Total Cycling, it would cost be $28 for packages under 2kg, and $44 for stuff over 2kg.

Ship them to me in HK! I go back home to AUS at least a couple of times a year and the wife does business trips. We can take them in our luggage, the send them on when we get there...

That's about 10x pricier than shipping items to Europe from the U.S.

It would be easier to buy a plane ticket and bring the frame in a box as luggage. Sheesh, man has walked on the moon and we still cannot figure out how to ship a large parcel to the southern hemisphere for less than $100?

The post office stopped taking my wheel boxes about 2 weeks ago. Out of the blue. Multiple ones all at once. They must have gotten a notice of some sort. I currently have virtually no way to ship internationally anymore.

People are buying cheap carbon frames from China and the shipping is only $80.
