Weekend Cycling Ride Reports - August 27/28

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling Ride Reports - August 27/28

Where did you cycle this weekend? Did you have a good ride? How was the weather? Did you see any interesting scenery?

Saturday - Here in lower mainland BC it is quite warm. I think today topped out at about 29C under clear blue skies and sunshine.

We finished our cycling tour today by cycling from my grandmother's place to my parent's place, a total of 53.17 km. My father suggested a route, which we followed, and he cycled out to meet us and then home again.

We have had a lovely cycling tour of Vancouver Island and this was a very nice way to end the tour.

We have cycled 8 days in a row (so far) ... a warm-up ride last Saturday, a century (100 miles) on Sunday, a 15 km recovery ride on Vancouver Island on Monday, 4 days of cycling on Vancouver Island, and now today. That's the most days in a row I've cycled in a long time.

Well, 98% of the local cyclists were up in Wichita Falls for the Hotter-N-Hell 100 this weekend. But I went and rode with the Greater Dallas Bicyclists on the "Watertower Ride". We got in 73 miles. There were 5 of the rando people out for the ride, which was pretty cool.

Well, I just got my first pairs of shoes and pedals today. To familiarize myself with the shoe-pedal combo, I went on a grueling eight-mile ride. No falls! Mazel tov.

The temperature was 100-something, pretty typical for so many of us this summer.

Scenery was the "lake" (for want of a better term) on one side and the campus of a company who hosts a local sprint tri on the other.

Commence jeering...

No rides for me this weekend. Brutal rain all day, and tomorrow a proper hurricane is coming. I think if the mass transit system is not operating -- planning to shut down Sunday at 8am -- that's a good excuse for not riding. Although part of me wants to go for a ride just for the experience!

My local club was doing a few rides out in Palos Verdes and all 3 routes started with the same 19 miles, so my friend who just got into riding did the 35 mile route while I did the 53 miler.

A fast 60kms catch a ferry to see my sweetie, and then another 100kms today. Because that's her new thing, apparently!

It was very nice, we pedaled out to a place called Coombs, where they have goats living on the roof. Also grass, I guess those things go together.

Anyways, we had a very nice lunch, and then back to Nanaimo for jazz and drinks that evening.

Did 100 km on dirt w/ huge climbs for the D2R2 in Mass and Vt yesterday. Epic ride and a ton of fun. Forgot how much harder climbs are when you barely have traction.

Machka, I'm jealous of you guys on Vancouver Island. I've wanted to bike there ever since my parents showed me pics of their trip 10 years ago.

50-miler on Saturday. Tuned up front DR and was amazed at the smooth shifting. Great day for a ride. No chance to ride on Sunday - celebrating daughter's 20th birthday.

200k Permanent on the VA eastern shore this morning... No, not really. Stayed in and checked out the hurricane news since we were in the middle of it. No trouble here, though a bunch of friends and neighbors have power out, trees down, etc.

Did a 67 mile loop from home to Otisco Lake, then past a few small lakes in Tully, NY on Saturday. Myself and two friends.

Irene has camped out here all day, so no outdoor riding today.

My riding partner and I rode a popular route outside of town this morning. I picked her up at her apartment at 7:00, got to the start at 7:15 and were rolling by 7:30. It was 80-degrees already but felt good. She carried 4 bottles, I had 3, as it's a long stretch between water stops. An out-and-back, this ride quickly gets into the country but it's a wide shouldered road with long rolling hills (about 2,300' of climbing)...very straight. Since this was the longest ride for either of us this year, we tried to do an easy pace and just rode side-by-side, which made for a pleasant outbound trip in 2 hours (31 miles each way) and a grueling return 2.5 hours, arriving back at the start at noon. Temp was 104 with about a 15 mph cross-wind, which felt like a blast furnace. The return trip was brutal.

These are at the turn-around...when we still had something to smile about.

The turn-around is a "town" called Andice, which as far as I can tell, consists of a small country store. As we pulled in, we were greeted by Jack the Knife Sharpener, who had his wares on display and several gallons of cold-ish water. I though "Hmmm...I wonder if the store's closed and he's just kind enough to put water out", but no, the store was open...I think he was just building good will. He had all sorts of stories and really made for an interesting rest stop. He sounded like a Texan but said he had been raised in Chico, CA.

JoeB, is that one of the OCC rides? I rode the Onondaga Cycling Club's route on the Syracuse 70.3 Ironman bike leg, at 56 miles around Jamesville Res, Deyruyter Res, up past Labrador and back to Jamesville beach. I couldn't start as late as the club did, so I headed off on my own at 7:30 for a solo ride. Longest ride of the year for me, and about 1,700 feet of climbing. Preparing for the Ride for Missing Children century at the end of September. I live in Onondaga Hill, and have been thinking about the ride on the OCC site that starts in Nedrow and goes around those lakes in Tully. Looks like a nice ride.

I rode down to Dallas for a change this afternoon. That's terrible for your average speed, but makes for nicer pictures, so I took my camera.
Shadows from a bridge rail.

It's Art. The sign says so!

Entering downtown via Main Street.

For years, the tallest building in Dallas had a Pegasus on top of it, and that has become a symbol of downtown.
Gargoyle on the Old Red Courthouse;

And the Stampede is on!

I see a red door and I want it painted black. Along with the whole building. No, wait, then it'd look just like the place down the street that WAS all black (and called "The Door", oddly enough.)

Fortunately, the City of Dallas was on the ball and put up this sign which kept me from plummetting to my death down the bikepath-o-fear.

39 miles today out into the hill country. Got started at 8 so the weather wasn't too hot. Passed a quite a few cyclists on their group rides as usual. It was already triple digits by noon though so I'm glad we were done earlier.

Me and about 14,000 other people did the Hotter Than Hell Hundred. It lived up to its name and was the hottest ride in their 30-year history. Our group made our goal of completing in less than 6hrs. 5hrs 55 minutes... talk about cutting it close!

You should go! We spent approx. 5 days there cycling at a leisurely pace and having a good look around. It was lovely.

I talk about it more in the Touring forum.

Sunday - 54 km in the Chilliwack area with Rowan and my father on a hot afternoon. Fortunately it did start to cool a bit toward evening. Mostly flat, but some wind to give us a bit of a challenge.

We've done almost 600K over the past 2 weeks that we've been in Canada ... it's been like winter training camp for us. We're getting a head start on the season!!

And I've got quite the cyclist tan now ... in just 2 weeks!
