2001 Bianchi Eros Road Bike for $200?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2001 Bianchi Eros Road Bike for $200?

I saw a Craigslist post on the 2001 Bianchi Eros selling for $200 and was wondering if it was too good to be true.

https://newyork.craigslist.org/que/bik/2576687417.html

He was selling it for $260 a few days ago and just lowered the price today. I just called him to ask him if I could see the bike this weekend since I'm too busy weekdays. But he told me to text him on friday to check if the bike would still be available by that time. On the other hand, what do you think about this?

Those look like Sora shifters rather than Campy. Kinda roughed up a bit too. Hard to go wrong at that price, but make sure it fits and all the components work smoothly together...

At that price, in that condition and with the wrong parts, I'd run away. Also, it looks smaller than a 54.

As mentioned above, it's got the wrong parts on it and looks to be a 53 or 51, but at that price just make sure everything runs well.

If it has the campy parts on it, GET IT!

My wife has that exact bike but in Burgundy... granted it is in much better condition.

If her bike fit me I would ride it everyday.

It's definitely not Campy. Their brifters have always had dual hidden cables. It's a frankenbike.

I would agree the shifters are not Campy, but he may find some value if the rest of the bike is original.

Hard to tell how bad of shape the bike is in from the pictures though, but it looks rough.

In fact, I think Bianchi has always had odd numbered frame sizes so it can't be a 54.

Thank you guys for commenting on the post! I just wish I had one of you guys to come with me to inspect it or even half of the knowledge of what you guys have about road bikes.

But from what I see:
- I should get the bike if it fits me and is in good condition.
- If it has Campy parts I should definitely get, if not, it better ride well.

What do you think would make the seller sell the Eros for SO little? Possibly something wrong with the frame? Or even a fake since it's supposed to be odd numbered? Unless the seller doesn't know the size.

The seller might not understand what I'm trying to say but I just texted him to ask if the Eros includes original parts and he replied "Yes all sock" so I'm guessing its all stock parts? I can't wait to check it out this weekend!

That's my understanding. My Veloce was a 55 and the next size down was a 53.

Between a seller and bikepedia, I'm sure you know which source I would believe first as to what "stock" (or even "sock") means.

Take a close look at the bar tape and the shifter that seems out of line. Wondering if the guy is selling it after a crash. Bike could be fine and I know peeps that would pay $200 for just the frame and fork, but definitely check it all over.

When you test ride it, shift through EVERY gear combination. Make sure the shifters move smoothly. Check all the cables for signs of abuse (frayed, severely kinked). Make sure nothing is loose. It's worth $200 if it's in good condition and won't need anything major any time soon. If you end up needing shifters or a bunch of other things, you'll end up spending close to that of a brand new bike with the same parts.

What To Inspect

From what I got around the web, this is my checklist:

- Check for frame and fork damage.
- Spot for bulges or dents in tubes.
- Check for bent fork.
- Check for bent seat. Any cracked tubing?
- Check frame for any corrosion.
- Spin the wheels for wobbles and hops.
- Check wheels for corrosion.
- Feel for play in the bearings by push and pull.

*** IF FRAME, FORK, & WHEELS PASS ***

- Go over the rest of the components looking for signs or heavy use or abuse.
- Brake pads, cables, grips aren't costly.
- Check for worn out chain wheels, cassette and chain.
- Check if it fits.

And from BF, it's these two:
~ Check for original components.
~ Ride through every gear. Does it ride smoothly?

I'm also bringing my Alien II just in case I need to adjust anything.

The seller deleted the old post and made a new one: https://newyork.craigslist.org/que/bik/2576687417.html

those aren't stock shifters. i agree that they look to be shimano sora sti shifters. the seller could have replaced them because the original campy mirage/veloce shifters were plastic. which could have been a good idea being in new york. i've seen the same levers brake before. would have gone with campy instead of shimano if it was mine though.

Rough shape, unknown component mix, small frame, still looks like a good deal to me.

You would not believe what I saw today... The Eros was so chipped throughout that its impossible to imagine what happened. The bike was also dirtier than a soiled mountain bike. The shfters were Sora with a "105" derailleur. I wouldnt trust the seller since everything was scratched off the bike. There were no Campy parts but no brand parts. There was also a dent on the frame so I told him I'm going to pass the deal. He asked me how much I would pay since he was desperate so I told him it's worth less than $100 and he told me to buy it for $80. So from $200 to $80, it doesnt need much knowledge for someone to know its still a bad deal.

This. Those older Bianchi's are made VERY well, despite this one looking a bit rough. Decent price IMO too, but like others have said, MUST work right.

But theres a dent on the top tube! Next thing you know theres gonna be a crack. I dont want to take my chance of getting a bad frame and make me add more money to the bike. In addition to the dented tube, it looked like it was scraped clean of paint or like it was burned. The seller didnt seem like bikers if that matters. More like a dirty drug dealer.

Eek! Then, due to your description, it's in NO WAY "worth $200"...He/she will be lucky to get $100 for it, if you can finaggle him down to say $80/$100 bucks? Id say go for it.....

He did tell me to get it for $80. I just thought it wasn't good enough. I don't know how much trouble I would get into after buying the bike.
