Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

1 mph!

Dosen't sound like much does it? However, on my after work ride today (about 15 miles) I upped my average from 15 to 16 mph. Being a newbie I was kind of happy about this! I guess I'm easily amused, but that 1 mph made my day!! Now, if I can maintain that increase over a longer ride I'll really be happy. I hope to do a 60 miler Friday, so I'll see how it goes.

First, its good that you increased it by 1mph... its a good improvement... Plus you should have no problem riding 60+ miles.

However for me:
I've only been cycling for a little over 3 months now and I used to think that my average speed was important. Now I realize that it is only a number because there are so many variables. I usually ride the exact same 24 mile route for training and depending on the wind, and lights, my average speed fluctuates like crazy. For me the stop and go, stop and go really slowed me down...

What I would do is to take note of how you feel during the ride, your breathing, how your arms and legs feel and the basic overall feeling of the ride.

I always feel good when I ride. That particular ride felt really good! I'm heading out tomorrow morning for about 60! I'm not sure exactly how far it is, as it's a new route for me, but I can't wait!! Lets Ride!

One day where the wind was quite heavy I averaged 24 km/h (over 13 km) going out and 34 going home from work, so many factors make a difference. If you want to measure progress, one way of going is with a HR measurer, the higher you can get your average pulse the better, that will be independent of external conditions.

that 1 mph is 7% increase in speed. Since power required is proportional to cube of speed, that 1mph requires an extra 20% power - a magnificent improvement.

Wrong, the best way to measure progress is with a powermeter. HR is affected by about a million things.
