Coldest weather you would ride your good bike in

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Coldest weather you would ride your good bike in

Hey, I live in Toronto and the weather is getting colder. The coldest I will ride my good bike is 13 degrees celcius. Im talking about taking out your good bike. Because I used to ride in -40 celcius on cheap $20 bikes to school in the worst weather imaginable. If you respond to this please tell me what your good bike is. Talking about your good bikes not your rain day bikes.

13 C = 55 F. That's a nice day around here. I'll ride down to about 10 F (-12 C) as long as it is dry an no sneaky ice patches.

Doesn't really have much to do with cold, more to do with snow I suppose. I'll ride the trainer when the snow gets here.

I only ride when it sunny and 70 degrees outside.

Oh..........and when it is like this, and for the record, this was my good road bike.

Low 20s if the roads are clear and dry. Snow, ice, water and other crap on the road is the main limiting factor, though anything colder than 20 degrees is going to be a short, painful ride.

I don't think I could do the that to my Tarmac I think next fall I'll build up a Allez as my backup/snow/etc bike. Shop has a frame for $500 but I've exhausted my bike funds for the year with the Tarmac purchase

I probably won't do much snow riding on my Colnago this year, that's why I built the SL1 up. I will also use my Redline Conquest from time to time.

I've ridden in the upper 20's a couple of times. We don't get a lot of snow down here but once I rode home after it started snowing very large, fluffy flakes. Actually a nice experience since there was no wind and no traffic.

Quid pro quo?

My good bike is a Waterford so I try to keep it out of the rain/snow. I've ridden it in the low teens F (-10C) and that is as cold as I've ridden. But if it's snowing I switch to an aluminum frame.

I rode my mtn bike in -40C/F conditions, but the coldest temps I rode my good bicycle (Marinoni Ciclo) in were probably only around -25C to -30C.

I rode CAM Challenges (Century-A-Month) in 2003 in Winnipeg, and 2005 and 2006 in central Alberta. And I commuted year round in Winnipeg.

I'm a pretty fair weather rider. Last year my buddies and I decided it was dry enough to head out even though it was 25F. Worst decision I ever made. thats cold enough to stand in let alone with the wind finding any opening in your closes to slide down. I hate being cold and even with the appropriate cold weather gear, my body took forever to warm up. my toes never did.

Well I rode outside all last winter and temperature was not a limiting factor. It was just an indicator of how I needed to dress. Roads conditions were what mattered. If bad then it was the winter prepped mountain bike. Otherwise it was my bad weather road bike. Too much chemical crap on the roads here for me to every think about taking out my "good bike". I guess my point is that for winter riding temperature in normally not that much of a factor when you consider everything else. If it matters, the coldest I saw last year was -7 F and I did a 27 mile ride that day.

lol, I live in Toronto as well. I thought of riding today but it's my lift day @ the gym. I was so amped to wear my fall bike clothing until the urgency to lift hit me. now im home from the gym and regretting on not riding today. it would've been an amazing ride day since there's less cars on the road than usual.

boohoo.

but to answer your question I'd probably go 12c the most. I'm used to running in that temp.

+1

Why would cold influence which bike you ride? I ride all my bikes well below freezing. Slop is another matter if I can help it.

I ride my commuter/tourer when it gets down to freezing, or when it's wet out.

My good bike is a Marinoni Delta.

Yea, what Banerjek said, cold is meaningless, it is the ice & slop I avoid.

Oh and, they all are good bikes, or I would not own them.

That's not cold. I've done a number of 200k+ rides that started in the teens and "warmed up" to 30-32.

But for the OP, the coldest it's ever been here on a ride is 3F, so that's your answer. I just built up a light 'cross bike though, so I think I'm going to mostly use that once it gets snowy/messy/cold-rainy etc for the winter.

Similar here, although if it's really cold, I'll often ride my mtn bike on the road because it's slower, thus less wind chill.

This is what I want to do also. Last year I used a MB as a winter bike but kept taking out the LeMond whenever the roads allowed. Now I am trying to land used CX bike so I can build it up as my winter ride.

Main problem last year was ice build up on the brakes and the rear cassette.

I don't mind any temperature but once the salt hits the road I turn to my winter bike.

Good bikes- Lynsley R230, Specialized Tarmac SL3, '87 Bianchi
Winter bike- Specialized Roubaix SL3 Sram Red.
