Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If you guys have issues w/ fog, I used to play hockey and had to wear an aquarium for a while (the full plexiglass mask)... it used to fog up like crazy. If you wipe it down with a little dish soap it'll stop fogging almost entirely.

Sorry if that's redundant/common knowledge. Figured I'd throw it out just in case.

Thanks guys. yea im really liking the look of those isla glasses and it would let me try the rx lense behind the actual glasses lense for a much more affordable price. Then I could buy the ESS ones for work and not have to tote them from my toolbox to home every time I wanted to go for a ride. Also I like the fact that the serfas ones come with sunglass specific lenses while the ess ones are only available in clear yellow smoke. (at least for an affordable price) and you can get polarized but its really expensive.

I will ask my optometrist about contacts when I go next because my gf wears them and she says she likes them you just have to get used to touching your eyes.

Thanks everyone for all the replies

Hey,
Check out SportRX. I got these glasses with Polycarbonate/Prescription Lenses for $79 shipped. This was my second pair from these guys and they replaced a lense for free for me 2 years after purchase. They even called me before fabrication lenses to make sure what color lens I wanted and suggested what would be better for low light a.m. rides. I have a dark grey pair for heavier sun and a pinkish/vermillion for my low light rides in a.m.. These frames have all the technical rubber strips to keep in place when you sweat etc. I hate the idea of spending $300+ for same frames with a brand name on them.

+1 on the contacts. I am right there with you as far as jobs go since I am an auto tech. Gloves and safety glasses are the rule now. Even if I am not actively using the safety glasses they are on my head. The nitrile gloves are great since I don't have to try and rip my nails off to get them clean. Contacts are a way of life in the summer, winter not as much. the biggest advantage I see (no pun intended) is that I have great peripheral vision with contacts, glasses not so much. I don't really have any problems with them either, so that's something else. If I did I wouldn't want to wear them either. Lasik would be my other option if I had a major problem with contacts though. The difference when I am out riding is just too great.

If your prescription is really strong, chances are you will not be able to use lense inserts behind safety glasses or similar types of glasses and chances are you will not be able to get prescription sports sunglasses like the Oakleys etc. because the lense may have to curve and that will throw the prescription off.

I have tried to do this myself, and it did not work for me because of that curve.

So, what I have done instead is to buy glasses with transition lenses, and they seem to work quite well. I chose one of the larger lenses available to have a bit more coverage.

They weren't expensive because they were part of a 2 for 1 deal at the shop.

I have Oakley Flak Jackets with prescription lenses and Transitions. I use them while riding and at work when I have to go into a factory setting. Oakley exceeds safety standards for protective lenses. You could try to convince the insurance company to cover them since they would be protective lenses too!

IMHO, prescription inserts in sunglasses suck. They get covered in sweat and grime, and they fog up. I've had a couple of pairs of sports sunglasses with inserts, and they just don't work very well.

Suck it up and buy a good pair of prescription glasses. You'll be happier in the long run.
