Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bottle Cages ???

One of my original aluminum cages finally broke and I need new ones. What's the 41's opinion on the best Bang 4 The Buck bottle cage? The Tacx Tao black AL cages are looking pretty sexy.

Cheap, reasonably light and attractive, effective.

I got insanely good prices on Elite cages recently at Icycles.
Like the model T, they've got 'em in basic black which suits many of my bikes.

I started with aluminum cages and then replaced them with carbon cages. The carbon cages are easier to put the bottles in and take back out than aluminum cages. The cages I like are Arundel. They are not the cheapest but you won't loose bottles them and they will last as long as you want to use them.

I personally prefer the classic lines of a metal cage and currently use king cage stainless...and am coveting a set of their Ti cages,

But to answer your question, the tacx Tao cages are generally the BF approved cage.

The nice thing about the aluminum cages is they leave black scuff marks all over your water bottles, proving that you are a die-hard bona fide road cyclist.

https://www.amazon.com/Tacx-Juno-Bicy...5787877&sr=8-1 Thats what i have. LBS gave it to me. Its pretty cool made of thick plastic and even has a little rubber button in it to help grip the bottle. Altho I removed mine because the release is super tight. Even without the little rubber button the release is kind hard. I have to stop pedaling and put my right foot at the rear of the stroke. grabe the bottle and pull/ twish pretty hard. but hey. the bottle isnt going anywhere.

My only complaint. Its heavier than aluminum and similar other bottle cages. but it wont scar or mar up your nice bottles and its plastic so it wont ever break I hope. and yes I have had my bottle cages struck before.

I have both and prefer the stainless. They hold the bottle better. The ti ones aren't as curved and the bottle moves laterally when I hit bumps.

Really?? Thanks for the tip, I will stick with the SS.

BTW stainless won't mark up your bottles like aluminum.

A member here bought a frameset and some other items off of this site (as shady as it looks) and received it without issue. They have full carbon cages for $11.50 each. I was thinking about ordering a couple since the risk is pretty low if they never show up.

^This... plus for $3 to $5 each, it's still the best bang for your buck if that's what you truly care about... I hightly doubt any $15-20 cage lasts 4 to 5 times longer than el-cheapo aluminum cage...

It depends on the look you want. I have different cages on different bikes and they all work, and cost less then $20 and they hold 24oz Polar bottles with no problems.

King Stainless are great cages that have that classic look, see: https://www.pricepoint.com/detail/139...p=055%20KINSS5

Or this style of King Stainless: https://www.pricepoint.com/detail.htm...8&hprice=14.98

Both King stainless steel cages weight in at 48 grms

Then on another bike I have Bontrager Race Lite Cage, their light at 38 grams and hold my bottles very securely, they come in assorted colors, see: https://www.bontrager.com/model/04072

Nobody needs a $50 cage when cages for less then half the cost and weighs just as much and will last just as long. I've had my King cages for 18 years, and the Bontrager for 4 years. I have mostly King cages, I bought the Bontrager in white because it matched the color scheme of the bike I was putting it on.

There are other good cages out there, just go into an LBS and find one you like that is made well. You're not going to find killer deals on cages on the net because your only talking less the $20 per cage. The sites I gave wasn't a result of shopping for your lowest price, just to show what they looked like.

Best price available for Tacx Carbon... whats also included are [useless] water bottles and they wont sell them separate for lower price... I prefer insulated bottles.. so i will prob just scrap these...

$80 for 28 grms cage? Why? When a Bontrager lite cage is 38 grams, is 10 grams worth the additional $65 dollars? not in my book.

True dat, but I go through about one AL cage a year between all 3 of my bikes. Time for something new on the road bike and I'll burn a couple of bucks for something looks nicer and drops a few grams, to a point. I'll keep my remaining AL on the MTB and the fixie.

At 38 grams at 14 bucks (minus team discount) the Bonty Lite composite cages may be the winner. I really like the looks of the Tacx Taos but all I read says the bottom tabs break easily.

eBay carbon cages. $25 for two, claimed 22-28g per cage, and they look nice. Can't go wrong.
