Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I dialed it up to 500 Watt

I was reluctant to even post this since I know that this will get flamed and heaps of bull**** will be spilled ... but I decided to post it anyway.

I was testing out my new disc wheel on my TT bike for the first time today and so I was cruising around the surrounding villages at a speed of about 37km/h.
At some point, after a pretty steep hill called "De Beerendries" I overtook a pretty muscular looking roadie and rode out of town.
The sun was setting behind me and so the shadows were becoming long in front of me.
Just a few hundred meters out of town I noticed by his shadow that this roadie I just passed had upped his speed and was drafting me.
A bit further there is a slight turn and after that a 2% long straight hilly part ... just when we entered the turn I suddenly noticed by his shadow that the guy was trying to overtake me ... being me I felt I couldn't let that happen and so I suddenly hammered it while we started on the hill.
A few seconds later I suddenly found myself riding up a 2% hill at 47km/h!
I kept this speed up for a little less than a minute till the top of the hill.
I was amazed myself ... the disc wheel probably has something to do with it too
There was a slight tailwind btw.
Man that was fun.

If you were racing up a grade at 47kmh you were probably putting out more than 500 watts... if only for a short period of time.

Good job.

Power data or it didn't happen.

Hey, now all you need to do is put out about 450 watts for 1hr while going up a mountain and you will be a top level pro!!!

I dialed it up to 1,220 watts last night. Didn't last long though.

Always go with your first gut feeling. Just kidding, you rode your bike, had fun and posted.. sounds like something that belongs on BF.

I always feel so left out of these contests since I have no power meter.

Just make up a number that sounds impressive. That's what we do.

I don't have a powermeter either.
I simply estimated the incline to be about 2% (using map data) and the tailwind to be about 10km/h (using weather data).
Then I used an online bike power calculator to come at somewhere around 525W ... which kind of corresponds with my perceived excersion effort and my other data.
A bit of hassle but it's accurate enough for me

450W is 450W no matter where. If you're going up a mountain you will just go slower than on a flat for the same power output.

Do many of the pro's ( climbers especially ) have FTP's that high? I thought they were in the upper 300's.

Actually for me as an aspiring TT'er ... W/kg isn't as important as W/CdA

Please note that it was only for about a minute.
Pro's do this stuff for hours or even weeks.
The difference isn't just big ... it's humongous.

Haha ... Always good to leave a little mistery in a story
I was amazed at how fast he got dropped actually (he probably was too) ... just after that slight hill was my favourite slowly descending bit of road where I like to really go fast to train for TT's ... and so I kept a pace of 50km/h there for about 2 miles ... you can imagine that I didn't even see him anymore after that.

Yesterday's humiliation: Being passed on a 9% climb by a dumb kid with 6" of his underwear hanging out the top of his waistband, and his pants falling down over the top tube of his bmx bike.
