time for a new bike!!!!!!!!!!!!!($1500)

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

time for a new bike!!!!!!!!!!!!!($1500)

ok, so the time is coming for me to start test riding and picking out my new bike. i plan on racing, especially crits and rr's, and collegiate racing next year. this will be my only road bike. i'm open to any material(s), and both compact and standard geometry. i'm on an allez now, and i like the compact geo, but i have never ridden a standard geometry bike. here's what i have locally: Giant, trek, specialized, cervelo, felt, litespeed(i think), cannondale, orbea, and i think that's it. like i said, i'm on a roughly $1500 budget for the bike alone, i've got pedals, shoes, computer, etc... The budget can flex probablly between $100 to $200 higher, but only if i absolutely fall in love with a certain bike. i realize that the most important thing to do is go ride the bikes, but i would love to hear what you guys have to say. I would also prefer to go new, but i know i can always look at used. thanks!

I'm a fan of Cannondale's mid-level stuff. Trickle down means you're seeing CAAD7 frames cheap.

For starters, try these. You're likely to find at least one of them that you like.

Cannondale R800...you may be able to find a 2004 R1000 in your price range...if you do, buy it.

Specialized Allez Comp

Felt F50

Trek Pilot 2.1

While you're test riding these, you'll probably come across another 2-4 that you like as well. Narrow it down to three and post again. Do a poll and see what everyone thinks. I'll warn you though...there are a lot of Felt lovers in this group...and it's not necessarily your best option.

When in doubt...choose the one with the best wheels. Hope this helps.

if you don't mind having something a year or 2 older and can find it, the Orbea Starship is a phenomenal bike. EXTREMELY light...i believe it was Iban Mayo's climbing bike in the TdF until last year (at which point they switched to the Orbea Orca). Orbea was only one of the 2 or 3 co. that can manipulate and fabricate frames from Columbus Starship aluminum tubing.

There's also been quite a few suggestions in a similar price range in my $2000 thread.. might want to check there too.
