Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

3/4 of the Year Complete ... Your Progress?

It is almost the end of September ... almost 3/4 of the way through the year.

1. Are you progressing toward meeting your cycling goals for the year?

2. What kind of distance have you managed for the year so far?

3. How many kilometres or miles did you cycle in September?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Goals ...
  • One of Rowan's and my goals was to do a CAM challenge ... to ride at least one Century in each month of the year. So far, we've got 9 centuries in 9 months.
  • Another goal was to ride at least 7000 km this year ... as of today we rolled over the 5000 km mark. And we've got 3 potentially good months of cycling to the end of the year!
  • I had in mind I might want to do a Super Randonneur series this Randonneuring year, and we've completed a 200K and a 300K, but if we're going to complete one, we still have the 400K and 600K to do. I'm not sure if that will happen.
  • And I also wanted to work on my upper body strength and do some cross training ... well, there's always the last 3 months for that for that. But I have been doing a little bit of upper body work and lots of walking, and we did get out in the canoe a few times last summer ... and now that things are warming up again, the last two weekends we've been on the water in a canoe, in a kayak, and on a surf ski.
2. 3/4 year distance: 5005 km (so far)
3. September (first month of spring) distance: well, we're not quite at the end of September just yet!
Yes, and if all goes well, I should surpass it. See my sig for my mileage goal and distance so far.
3. How many kilometres or miles did you cycle in September?
So far, 404 miles. Hope to get in a couple more rides by the end of the week. Should make about 450+ total for the month.
6 Centuries so far which is more than I planned on.
Behind on miles =( 2-3 months off in spring due to knee surgery + relearning to walk and recovery really set me back.
Well I'd have to say that I have exceeded my goals for this year. Just started this madness in the spring of 2010 and managed a tad over 3000 miles last year. Was not sure what to set this years goal to so I figured to double last years distance.
But I've already exceeded that goal as I am over 6000 miles for the year and will continue to bike outside throughout the year.
My monthly total for Sep is pretty low as I cut back for a couple of races that wound up being cancelled. Now my goal is to stay in the top ten of all riders for the website I log my miles in for the rest of the year.
I picked up the "Bible" lately and will be starting a more regimented training program soon.
I really did not keep a close track of my miles and progress until last month. I can guess how many miles since January but not exact since I've used multiple apps for recording and finally settled on only one from last month on.
I tried to look back at previous months and I likely averaged about 300 miles a month. In late July I decided to step it up and ride everyday weather permitting. Since I have greatly increased my mileage to the point where for September I'll have over 600 miles. I'm at 507 today.
Now that I'm really paying attention to my miles and performance, I can start to set goals and improve a liitle more with each ride.
Good thread idea.
So far I've managed to meet 90% of my goals. I've almost doubled by riding mileage since last year, there's only on hill climb I haven't done yet and I participated in a few crits. So I should be able tom complete my tasks.
I'm at 1700mi for the year so far and have I've only done about 160miles this month which is really low for me probably the least in a month of the year so far.
I can't answer 2/3 of your questions without going to my gps files, which are on the computer at home. I don't honestly care what the answers are, though.
But as for my goals - and thanks for asking! - I'm about halfway there, and the rains are already starting to make life miserable. I've had my bike in lots of gorgeous places in the Cascades. I'd still like to do Hurricane Ridge Road ( 5,240 feet of climbing in 17 miles, inside a national park ) and Mt Baker, though.
Partially torn ACL, MCL and inner lateral meniscus on my left knee... Surgery hopefully right after Thanksgiving so that I can have a clean slate and hard push in 2012.
Still did my first metric century (a sad 17.4 mph avg. on a relatively flat course with lots of cross and head wind), but haven't tracked my total miles at this point. More than the previous year, whatever that was...
1. Are you progressing toward meeting your cycling goals for the year? I didn't have a goal for this year until a month ago, when I decided I wanted to get a century in. Checked that off weekend before last.
2. What kind of distance have you managed for the year so far? I'm currently at 1,333 miles for the year, surpassing last year's total of 1,144.
3. How many kilometres or miles did you cycle in September? 280 miles so far in September but I'm planning on getting an extra 20 in sometime this week so I can reach 300.
1. Are you progressing toward meeting your cycling goals for the year?
I had no goals, just wanted to commute a bit more than last year (about 2-3 days/week during nice weather). Ended up buying my first road bike in July, braking my first bone in a crash in August, and doing my first shop group ride and then century this month. I also only drive to work about twice a month now. For the year I've spent perhaps $2000 on my new bike/bike gear, with the bike gear mostly being shorts, jerseys, etc.
2. What kind of distance have you managed for the year so far? Probably a bit over 1000 miles across my 3 bikes.
3. How many kilometres or miles did you cycle in September? 236mi so far, including some recovery time from a broken arm.
1.) At the beginning of the year, I wanted a road bike but only had my 26" hybrid. I was planning to put 1000 miles on it. I got a road bike in March and by May my new goal was to complete a century, which I did earlier this month. My short term goal is to do 100 miles a week. I reset this goal every week
2.) I didn't start keeping tracking until June, but I've logged 1930 miles since then. I'd like to see if I can break 3000 miles before the end of the year. I've probably got another 1000 or so that weren't logged, but I've got no way to figure it out so they won't count against the total.
3.) 580 miles this month
I have another goal which is to break 5000 miles in a 12 month period - so really pushing towards June next year.
1. Goals? I don' need no stinkin' goals.
2. A little over 2k miles which is way below my average the last few years.
3. 435 miles in September, though, and hope to make it to 500 for the month. We'll see if I make it. Hopefully I'll be able to keep up that pace and bring my overall mileage for the year up to something respectable.
This is the first full month since 2008 or so I've had reliable metrics.
So MTD for September I have:
288 miles and 12,273 feet climbing
I'd set an arbitrary climbing goal of 10K feet per month. I reckon I might have to bump that up to 15,000 feet per month.
I've raced 36 races this year. TT, TTT, Crit, RR, Circuit Race, XC, STXC, XCTT. Still need to do a cyclocross race(s) and training for a 6 hour XC race. Mileage is down...only 5500miles for the year so far. 500 miles this september with one week off.
A few centuries in the book. Upgraded in Road and Cross this year. Would like to move up to Cat1 XC next year.
It's been a great year racing. Better than last year. Anything over 100 miles isn't meeting my goals right now and don't really train for that distance. I'll do it but not my goal. Next year, it will be more XC type races.
1. Are you progressing toward meeting your cycling goals for the year?
I only set goals on a monthly basis. I have met each goal I have set for myself.
2. What kind of distance have you managed for the year so far?
I am sitting at 2,000.54 miles, but I did not start tracking until April 1st.
3. How many kilometres or miles did you cycle in September?
I am going to go on a short 24 mile ride tomorrow, just to meet my goal of 500mi and then I will take a few days off to prepare for the Tour de Scottsdale on October 3.
Considering I had no goals at all, I'd say I'm doing pretty well!
2. What kind of distance have you managed for the year so far?
Thus far, 5888.14 mi.
3. How many kilometres or miles did you cycle in September?
September's not over yet. I'll probably ride another day or two. So far this month, 739.22mi
Met girlfriend in May, shortly after l'Etape. Training's been in the toilet ever since.
101 Activities
3164 Miles (blech, but that doesn't include commuter miles)
158825 feet climbed
Only 7 of my 12 centuries completed for the year.
1. Are you progressing toward meeting your cycling goals for the year?
No real goals here, aside from get faster. I think I'm getting faster. I guess I sorta have an elevation goal of 150k ft for the year.
2. What kind of distance have you managed for the year so far?
2700mi / 107,000ft elev gain(some is on mtb, so the numbers seem lower than they feel. )
3. How many kilometres or miles did you cycle in September?
Only 230mi in Sept, however at least half of that is on a mountain bike on mountain terrain.
