'11 Reynolds Assault cracked ?
I just received my Reynolds Assault today and when I inspected them I saw that there seems to be a crack right by the valve that has been "fixed" or maybe just covered with something.
I was wondering what you guys think could that affect the integrity of the wheel should I return them back or is it just nothing ?
I greatly appreciate any input
Thank you

If it was me, I'd return it and ask for another one. You paid good money for a new undamaged rim. That rim looks to be damaged and repaired to me.
Good luck

I bought of a pair of Reynolds early this year. I'd exchange these ASAP. Love my Reynolds but this is unacceptable.

I would e-mail reynolds a picture and see what they say. The assaults are made in asia. I guess they are letting the qc slip a bit. I wonder if anybody in the USA inspects the wheels before they are shipped out.

Everyone we should ask the OP where he bought those Assaults (ebay? CL? LBS?). Let's not assume reynolds is selling broken products.

The repair looks fine and I'm sure holding up won't be a problem. But you paid for brand new wheels - return them

Wow, really?!?! You can actually correlate QC slip and being made in Asia?!?!

Even your claim of being made in the USA will result in better QC is constipated thinking. There are quite a few products made in the USA that show a lack of QC...but I'm sure you know this.
Next you are going to tell us that aluminum bike frames have a lifespan of 4 years

OP, return those wheels...even if the crack is deemed cosmetic, that will eat away at you constantly. You paid your money, a little peace of mind should go with that purchase. Regardless of where it is made.

Return them. If they really think they're perfectly fine they can try passing them on to the next sucker.

thank you for all the input guys it really helped me out a lot to make up my mind.
I contacted the seller and of course on the listing on ebay it says that the wheels are new, undamaged etc. I asked for a replacement first but he didn't even bother answering that question, he was like just send them back which is exactly what I will be doing.
I guess I'm in the market for wheels again now
Any suggestions on something similar or good wheels around $ 1.000
Thank you

Ah, so you are under the impression that the manufacturer located in Asia have no personnel under Reynold's payroll to look over the products that bear their name. That is a pretty wild assumption.
Even your claim of being made in the USA will result in better QC is constipated thinking. There are quite a few products made in the USA that show a lack of QC...but I'm sure you know this.

FYI: Reynolds (and numerous other "big name" wheel manufacturers) has been making carbon wheels in Asia for quite some time now ... I love my Attacks and Assaults.

None personally. A number of friends ride Assaults and the DV3K series wheels from Reynolds (the ones with the internal nipples) and they're pretty happy with them. From what they tell me, Reynolds are good wheels, but nothing out of this world.
The OP asked for other options similar to Reynolds for around the $1000 mark. The wheels I listed are comparable and around his price point. Some are lighter than the Reynolds, others are deeper, some are both. Just more options for him to consider.
Personally, I have a set of Soul C5.0's and love them. Been riding them since March and have probably got 4k or 5k miles on them.
