Any recommendations for good, stiff shoes, but not clipless?
I need some shoes for road cycling, but I can't afford good clipless shoes or pedals right now. So I'm looking for some recommendations on some cheap shoes that are stiff and comfortable for riding with platform pedals.

Edit: I've been using my Nike Shox shoes, but they are way too flexy and lead to my feet hurting.

I just use Nike running shoes. Always have. Same pair of shoes lasted 4 years in college of riding everyday to classes

A quick web search find this:

Not exactly cheap though, since you can get cycling shoes for less.

It is a hard thing to find. The soles have to be flat without raised cushion bumps or crazy designs. I use a 75% worn out cross training type shoe sole for max stiffness and flatness. You could always take a belt sander to it if you don't want to wait around for it to go flat. Then get a wide platform pedal used for bmx that's flat and no concave. This will eliminate any shoe squish or bounce and be rock solid at 500-600 watts.

A lot of people I know who don't ride clipless wear Adidas Sambas.

I use my hiking boots for riding platform pedals. They're pretty stiff.

Converse Allstars. Adidas Sambas. Vans. Any cheap touring shoe from Performance, just dont use the clips yet.

+1 for Adidas Samba.

Football, baseball, soccer shoes. Stiff soles. Don't know how it will work with regular pedals though.
