Charity Rides, Am I Bad

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Charity Rides, Am I Bad

Most everyone who knows me, knows I ride serious recreational all the time and have a few bikes with knowledgable interest in the sport.
So when charity rides come up like; cancer research causes, breast cancer awareness, etc. I am asked to participate.

My answers are always a flat out NO, don't do them. One guy asked why and demanded an answer upon the shock of mine.

I don't do anything that has to do with human beings because we are the most dispicable, insidious, diabolocial, malicious things on earth ( I'm included ) and I don't want to help contribute to population numbers.

If it were for the orphaned chimpanzee's in Cameroon or the silver backed gorillas of Rwanda I would ride 100 miles but not for people. I am not a humanitarian.

He was so taken back didn't know what to say.

Am I going to hell in a handbasket?

Let me ask you, do you really care?

You realize the irony in even asking that question right? You say you are not a humanitarian and hate humans, but then turn around and ask if you are going to hell for feeling that way. You are conflicted, and really do care. Now, go do a charity ride.

I absolutely agree. Most of the worlds problems can be traced back to overpopulation. Too many people.... not enough resources.

No. Some would say you are from there though..

I have done 5 significant rides raising a total of over 50k. I have done my share. Been taken out by idiot riders had bikes damaged and been frustrated by poor organization. If I wasn't a cyclist, I may do a charity ride. I will just throw a hundred bucks as a sponsor now and then but will leave the riding to others.

OK so what if the charity supported the spread of AIDS or was all about throwing every second child into a river? Would you go for that?

lets hope you aren't married or have kids and then one day find out one of them is diagnosed with a terminal illness. or that one day you get injured at work a become a quadriplegic, and your family struggles to survive financially.

cause I'm fairly certain then you would do a 180 and be interested in other people's hardships and want them to be interested in yours.

maybe you might not be a humanitarian, or maybe you're just a self absorbed pr*ck.

I feel the same way, except I hate most other animals as well -- a handful of invertebrates are OK, but otherwise I agree. Great post!

If this is a joke,
****.

If you're serious,
you're kind of a miserable human being and should probably get rid of your own contribution to the population before despising everyone else's.

Actually, the fact that you think a child with cancer deserves what they've got and is just contributing to the "despicable number of humans" means if I met you in person, I'd probably beat the crap out you.

You asked

(On another note, someone lock this stupid thread already.)
