Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Relocating to Phoenix

The wife and I just moved to (North) Phoenix for 1-2 years from Houston. The weather has been perfect for the past week we have been here. Hopefully we will have our bikes in time for next weekend. I found some good routes online for the area we are in.

I'm so jealous. I lived in Phoenix for 4 years and just moved to SC. It sucks here, I want to be back! Excellent riding year round, and not having to ever check the weather forecast was the best. Sun, sun, and more sun!

Yes, it may be a bit warmer then! In Houston we could usually ride early in the morning (at sunrise) for a few hours during the hot months.

Sweet! I am a big fan of AZ in general. Great cycling, road and mtb and you can still have all four seasons if you head for higher ground. I am thinking of buying a home in Scottsdale for winters.

I live in North Phoenix also, although North Phoenix can be a somewhat nebulous description, covering a fairly wide and diverse area. Don't know what sort of riding you're looking for, but if you are looking for group rides, there are a couple that start in North Phoenix, and a ton of them in Scottsdale. It's already arm-warmer weather in the mornings (50's), which is astounding considering just about a week ago, it was mid 80's when the sun rose.

If you can get your bikes in time come out and ride the Stenholm 100 on the 22nd of this month. Look it up on Facebook. It is a great, well supported ride that is a lot of fun.

What's the deal with this ride? The Facebook page for it is pretty vague. Where does it go, where do you sign up, where is the parking, etc.

Charity ride that benefits first responders/families.
Departs and Returns to Desert Horizon Park (park here as well, but arrive early or you will be parking in a nearby neighborhood.
56th Street & Paradise Lane (16030 N. 56th Street), on 56th Street between Bell and Greenway roads.

$25 donation (that's what it was last year), you ride in a police escorted "bubble" (this is NOT a race).

Course-

Stenholm 100

A little bit more about it here.

Glad you found the flyer. It was a good time last year and I will definitely be there again this year.

It's $30 this year. Which is fine since it all appears to go to the charity. It benefits the police so I'm sure all the police escort is donated too.

Who has ridden this before? The start/finish area is a small park with very little parking. Next to a police station, I'm sure we can't park there. But there are a high school and a church about 1/2 mile away. Is it better to park there? I hate the idea of parking in a neighborhood, I know I wouldn't want random people parked all up and down my street on a Saturday.

I rode last year and parked in the lot for the park behind the station. I can't recall what time I arrived but it was just before registration started. Beyond that I don't know for sure where others parked, I just saw them rolling up on bicycles from somewhere other than the start/finish.
