Cyclesheme - are Marin or Giant worth spending a grand on?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cyclesheme - are Marin or Giant worth spending a grand on?

I've got until the 22nd Oct to put in an order if I want to take part, however my LBS has accounts with Marin and Giant.

What's the feeling about these makes of bike?

My current ride is a vintage Bates road bike which is incredibly light steel frame (Reynolds tubing I believe) and almost leans towards track bike design in it's sparseness (but has gears and freewheel etc so isn't a track bike at all).

I can't decide if I'll just end up with a heavier (but new) road bike which would defeat the object really.

Cheers,

Joe

I have experience with two Giant road bikes and I am about to buy a Giant 29er mountain bike. I went from an OCR 3 to a TCR Advanced and have been thrilled. In my opinion they offer great bang for buck. You need to be a bit more specific on model though. I also have a Marin Hybrid bike which I feel is not so nice, but I only paid a couple hundred dollars for. Perhaps a bit more information will get you better results.

Try 'em. You'll know if it's worth it.

Thanks chaps - it's a complete open book on what model just from those two manufacturers.

I guess what I'm really asking is can you get a very lightweight bike for £1000 from Marin or Giant.

If there's another brand that should be considered as well then I'm all ears as there is another LBS I could use, I just like these guys as they've sorted me out a few times.

I think you'll get a better fit on a bike that comes in more sizes.

Can't speak of Marin but have had a Giant in my collection for decades. Great bike that is as durable as any other bike I have had. They tend to use the same component fit out as every other big brand company. (Shimano, Sram, FSA etc...)
If you tend to favor big brand names like Cannondale or Trek I say give it a try anyway and Giant will one of names you look for in the future..

hows that for a commercial?
