Considering swapping groupsets between bikes.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Considering swapping groupsets between bikes.

I've been thinking about this for a while. I'm considering swapping my rival groupset from my cross bike to my Trek 1.2 for crits this spring.

I ride my S2 with rival much more regularly, but I'm still hesitant to race it in crits. My 1.2 has Sora right now and I HATE the thumb shifters, but I think they may be alright on my cross bike.

Honestly, I feel silly putting on a group thats probably worth more than what I paid for bike, but I think the inexpensive aluminum frame with a decent group setup might be the way to go this spring. Anybody else ever do anything this silly?

Rival on an inexpensive aluminum frame? It's not just not silly, it's a time honored practice for crit racers.

So you have 3 bikes, right? Unnamed cross bike with Rival, S2 with Rival, and Trek 1.2 with Sora?

If you're not riding the cross bike much or especially not offroad, then this plan might work.

If you do ride it, particularly offroad, then I wouldn't settle for Sora on it. Instead I'd save money over the winter and shop carefully on ebay for the full Rival gruppo or build your own parts & pieces. (Maybe use different cranks, tektro brakes, etc.)

Oh, and now that I think about it, you'd want to get rid of Sora for a crit bike anyway since it's supposedly very difficult to hit the thumb button from the drops.

Rival on an Aluminum crit bike makes sense to me as well. Not a Sora fan here and fully understand why you would do it.

Colin - spot on. It's a Motobecane fantom cross pro with Rival.
Caloso - that was my first reason for considering it.

Good to know! I think I'll leave the Rival on the cross bike for cross season then switch sometime in Jan. Maybe I could even scavenge some better parts from my shimano-happy club!
