High pressure tire blowout!

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've never really paid attention to having a minimum as I've typically used feel for what works best?

OP I've used those same tires, two sets with no real issues other than a puncture, at 105/110?

Just saw the pics and actually I've used the slicks, which are a little different than the OP...
I used to use the Pro Slick, but they don't come in colors.

Sooo, black isn't a color? I understand what you're saying although I prefer a tire with no added colors as I always seem to make them look worse after a couple rides than a standard black tire...

Couple of thoughts:

First, you might want to check the pressure gauge on your pump to ensure that it's accurate. I understand that they can be pretty far off.

Second, what did your friend say about your unwillingness to walk a half-mile?

I had a blowout on a Challenge Strada tubular. I had the pressure at 120psi. Next time, I'll keep it at 110psi, despite what the label on the side says.

I think this was a matter of hitting the wrong rock, at the wrong angle.

Doubt the extra 10psi was a huge factor. Doubt that the tire is materially defective.

Is there a way to check the accuracy of the pump? I doubt it's 100% accurate, but I did put about 15psi more than normal in the tire. The blowout occured on a very busy road. There was no way I was going to walk along the side of the road in my spandex pants, carrying a bike, in the middle of a Marine Corps base at lunch time when everyone is driving around.

You sure it was a rock and not a piece of metal or something?

Years ago I used to inflate tire to max psi. I soon learned to follow a formula similar to psimet's which factors in rider weight. wit it no longer at max psi, it rides better/smoother for me.

corners a hell of a lot better too, most noticeabley with bumps and such in mid corner when heeled over.

My neighbor has a digital pressure gauge, so that's how I learned that my old pump was off by ~25psi. Another possibility would be to take your bike to your LBS, pump up a tire with your pump, then immediately read what the LBS's gauge shows. It will not be exact since some air escapes while removing and adding nozzles, but that should give you an idea of whether your pump gauge is way off.

Hopefully someone else will offer ideas for an even more accurate check.
