original post: [I'm a 56cm/22" rider near Los Angeles looking for a used road bike. I want at least shimano STI's and everything else can be bottom of the line for under $200. Is this possible? and if anyone has a used bike like this, please respond.]
Well, OK, i'm just looking for something to get started with road biking, seeing if i can get used to that kind of riding. But i want something decent.

umm if your asking for 105, it may be a fat chance, maybe you can settle something on ebay?

If you don't have an experienced friend who can help you out, your chances of doing well are slim.

Doesn't have to be 105 to be STI. Sora and Tiagra are common on entry-level bikes and will do fine for a beginner. That said, it'd be tough to find any STI-adorned bike for < $200.
I picked up a 1999 Bianchi Volpe for $360, and it had Shimano RSX seven speed shifters. I sold off the RSX components for about $130 and put on a new 105 group for $400. It is a great commuter, tourer, and leisure ride bike.
If you're willing to stretch your dollars a little higher than $200, you can probably pull this off. Any reason why it is STI or bust? Old school downtube shifters are nice in certain respects and plenty capable of accomodating beginning riders. Good luck and let us know what you make out with.

In the LA area, you might try looking in the Recycler and get a decent used bike, plus you could test ride it before you buy one. You can also go to this link to view ads online https://recycler.com/asp/Class.asp?iC=310
I purchased my first road bike this way and it worked great for me. Lots of good deals if you know what you are looking for.
