Component Compatibility

Are Shimano shifters compatible with mixed derailleurs?

Say, 105 (5700) shifters and Dura Ace (7900) DR's, etc.

Is there anywhere that lists what is compatible with what? Shimano/SRAM/Campy. (I know Campy is only compatible with Campy.) I assume SRAM uses different throw than Shimano but I've read of someone using SRAM shifters and (I think) Ultegra DR's.

There's a Shimano model compatability chart out there.

Basically all Shimano road components work together except 7900 front derailleur and brakes. Those use a different cable pull. Shimano 9sp MTB rear derailleurs work with Shimano road shifters but 10sp MTB does not. Sram cassettes fit Shimano 8/9sp splines and work with Shimano derailleurs. Sram front derailleurs and brakes match the pre-7900 cable pulls. Sram rears use their own cable pull but some Sram MTB derailleurs use the same pull. Campy is different from both Shimano and Sram for rear derailleurs but fronts and brake cable pull matches Sram/pre-7900 shimano.

Campy 10 speed Ergo shifters work with the new SRAM X9/X0 Exact Actuation RD with Shimano cassettes. Combination doesn't work with SRAM cassettes. YMMV

Shimano left shifters don't work with front derailleurs of the opposite type (ie road shifters don't work with mountain front derailleurs). You could do what I do and go friction and not worry about compatibility as it's all good when you go friction.
