A grueling sample from the french alps might be climbing up the galibier, this is actually going up two cols, first the telegraphe and then the galibier itself.
about 2000 meters of elevation gain. so then you are halfway there, pretty grueling but doable.

I suppose it's my Ohio upbringing. 2,000ft or ~700m of elevation is a decent amount of climbing in one ride for me, but then again I have never learned what a 'climbing ride' is all about. 2,000m would be pretty grueling for sure. Double that, on a consistent basis, for nearly a month? Well, that's not my idea of a vacation!

I took my road bike with 53*39 on the front, but did swap out the rear derailleur for a mid length cage so I could run a 13*29 for the trip. Knees were fine...
My second day was over the Col du Telegraphe and Galibier which gerundium posted, but was ridden as a loop back to Bourg D'Oisans; first riding over the Col du Glandon and Col de la Croix de Fer. One of the bigger days, but not my biggest. Every ride was in the mountains, with the biggest day including 5 cols and 7,298 metres vert over 175km!

Awesome! Thanks for the link. From an initial skim, it sounds like a totally epic trip! Amazing pics. I know they can't come close to doing justice to the real sights. Impressive sticking with a standard 53-39 crankset!

Thanks. Not everyone's idea of a holiday, but was an amazing trip. The scenery stunning, the climbs amazing and the motorists were so respectful!

I rode 177,000 feet last month too. That's not so tough. I could crank it out in 90 minutes by keeping my average speed high ehough.
