Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Avoiding Leg Cramps

Suggestions for avoiding cramps needed. Ok 2 times this year I have experienced cramps near the end of some tough rides. One on a 100 mile tour with some tough hills and 5000 ft of climbing and then racing the Iceman mtn bike race this past weekend. I am in pretty good shape with over 5000 miles or riding this year and am a fit person.... but obviously for me a 2.5 race was a tough effort as I did only 2 mtn bike races this year and no road races so I am really not a racer. Still I am able to do rides with the local race team and hang right up there on the weekly club ride slaughterfest so this cramping is troubling to say the least. Thanks for any suggestions.

Eat something salty at the 1/2 way point and at the 3/4th way point a long ride.

Use some kind of electrolyte drink or sports drink instead of water such as GU Electrolyte Brew(The Blueberry flavor contains 2x sodium which will help a lot) or maybe NUUN tablets.

And remember keep on eating and drinking regularly on a ride.

Potassium and electrolytes...I do bananas and Gatorade. I hit the Gatorade through out a long effort, over 60 miles.

Too many possible causes to give definitive answers.

Could be dehydration...drink more.
Could be low sodium/potassium....gatorade.
Could be low calcium...eat some tums.
Could be "muscle fatigue" cramps...back off on your exertion level.
Could be something else entirely...
