30 to 50 mph winds today....

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

50% chance of rain. Going out on a long stretch for a TT with no cover for 30 miles. Might be windy too. Just do it!

So, for the HTFUers that responded, which of you honestly would ride with 50 mph gusts.

I've done it...pretty bad when it's a cross wind.

Word to the wise...start your ride into the wind. You don't want to be tired and trying to fight that wind, fight it early and enjoy it on the way home.

My loop would be 14 miles into, 2 miles cross and then back with the wind. I hate to admit it but I was thinking of trying to get my wife to drop me 40 miles south and then ride back. Lame I know but yesterdays ride I was averaging a heart rate of 150 going into a 25 mph wind and 161 coming back. You would think it would be easier coming back but the sheer adrenaline rush of flying home just put me into overdrive. What a frikin rush!

Yeah, I'm gonna ride...after church. How could I not....it will be a sufferfest going south but I can't wait for the return. It's the only chance I get at this age (58) I get to play at being Albert Contador.

I will be today. And have often. I live in Oklahoma for Pete's sake. If I didn't ride in wind, I'd never ride.

Good for you! You are running out of weather in your part of the country to allow riding. But I bet Alberto is out for a short ride.

Reminds me of a story about Lance some years ago. The season has ended and some Euro cycling friend called him quite drunk on a Christmas eve and slurs " Lance...tell me your not riding please tell me your not riding" On the other end the sound of wind hitting a cell phone..." Yup, I'm riding".

If the wind is steady, I would ride. If you are saying the winds are 30 with a 20 mph gust factor, then probably not. Those passing tractor/trailers swaying around and flying debris can present very real hazards.

I feel like I need to take advantage of every day that I am off from work, and that the weather is not really bad (I don't ride in the rain). Smack dab in the middle of my ride is a 3 mile stretch straight into the wind. On days like today I just grin and bear it, and maybe grumble and cuss a little bit too. :-)

No the winds are steady with 30 mph and gusts to 50. My loop is free of any truck traffic and has very little road traffic. Not uncommon to be out for 2 hours and be passed by less than 10 vehicles.

I just checked. It's pretty calm and warm in the garage. That's where the new Rock & Roll trainer is.
