Chain recommendation?
So many choices that I am confused.Need chain for 8 speed cassette. My budget is limited therefore don't need race light chains. What I need is reasonably light.
I looked at SRAM but can't figure which model KMC? again not sure which one. Shimano? good ones are way pricy. So hoping someone helps me out here Thank you |
Do you have a 9 or 10 speed cassette?
if it is 9 speed: 9-Speed Sram if it is 10 speed: 10-Speed Sram |
You don't need a 9 or 10 speed chain. You need either a 9 speed chain or a 10 speed chain. They are different.
If you need a 9 speed chain get a SRAM PC 951, PC 971 or PC 991. If you need a 10 speed chain get any SRAM chain that model that starts with PC 10--. Figure out how much money you want to spend and then buy the model that is at that level. It's so easy. |
Depends on your cassette. KMC has them all X-10 series for 10 speed and X-9 series for 9 speed.

Ok. So go to your LBS and ask them to give you an 8 speed chain.

You want a Sram PC-850, 870, or 890. Note the big 8 on the lower right.
NOS Sram PC-48, 58, and 68 would work as well. http://media.performancebike.com/ima...12-NCL-BOX.JPG |

What group are you putting on your Scattante that only has 8 speeds?
I believe Shimano 2300 is the only new 8 speed road group that you can buy right now... |

Reasonably light? I hope its not 350g
Also SRAM doesn't really make them with performance in mind because they probably assume that if you were a performance oriented cyclist that you would have a 10 speed group. |

8 speed chains aren't going to be as light because they're wider than 9 or 10 speed chains.

I use Shimano HG40 or HG91 chains. The HG40s are $18 and the HG91s are $30 on ebay. They're a lot cheaper and last a lot longer than 10-speed chains.

I believe Shimano 2300 is the only new 8 speed road group that you can buy right now... already. Even on 8 speed I rarely use the highest 2 rings.Basically only useable gears I use is 6. |
thank you guys.As you can tell I am not an expert or pretend to be one. Thanks for your feedback.

based on weight I decided on SRAM PC-850
318g Once cut to size maybe 300g. Not bad for beefy chain. |
