Cannondale R800 Cad3

Notices
Road Cycling ďIt is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.Ē -- Ernest Hemingway

Cannondale R800 Cad3

I'm going to check out another bike later today and would like some input.

It's a 1997 Cannondale R800 Cad3..... all Shimano 105 and said to be in very good condition. The bike is yellow to red fade and I think I've nailed it down to a 1997. The seller wants $400.00 for the bike and I'm not sure its too much or a fair asking price.

I thought I read somewhere these bikes had a problem with the rear drops cracking? Here is a PIC

TIA.....

It sounds pretty fair. I have not heard of the problem with the frame.
Unless your "I heard" was who said they heared that there cousins uncles mules sisters brother had one that broke. Never listen to that junk.
A CAAD-3 design frame and a 105 set for $400 You almost cant go wrong. IMHO

Thanks....

Someone on this site said they had a problem with the rear drops, and the designed changed in 97 to correct the problem. I'll try to find the post.

Cad 3 , stiff riding frame with a high BB more suited for Crits.

I have a 97 R500 and have had no problems with the drops at all. the Vintage Cannondale site catalog shows the Yellow to Red fade for the R800 so you are right on the year. I love my CAD3 frame and its ride. Just my preference for stiff bikes I suppose.

I like Cannondales, but I'd try to push the price down to $300-350, considering the age of the components and frame...

Don't worry about the dropouts; that was with the previous ("2.8 Aluminum") frame.

Yeah. $400 for that bike is an extremely fair asking price. Or rather one that I'd expect and be willing to pay (granted no dents, dings)

Here's a guy that wants $400 AU just for the frame: https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Cannonda...#ht_500wt_1245

That one ended up not being the year the seller had stated nor the condition...... I hope this one is not another waste of time.

Price sounds fair, I'm trying to sell a tiagra equipped '99 R300 in excellent condition for $350, so far no dice on craigslist, guess 60cm frames are a tough sell cuz there aren't as many of us tall cyclists

^ Yeah, I would guess 58cm, but that's less than an inch difference, so might be hard to see with the eye.

People can want whatever they want, but here's a CAAD3 frame that actually sold for $61.

Also a Sora-equipped CAAD3 went for a palty $180, but the shipping was $120, so...

Yeah, that doesn't look like a 60, but who knows. I do remember that back then (not sure if they still do) the top tube was longish, so watch your reach when you test ride it.

Edit: The geometry thing might have been the other way around. Can't remember.

I watched that one. . but yeah. Preaching to the choir on what people want versus what they deserve. I've been watching this for about a month wondering if and when the seller is going to realize something is. . . wrong:

$645 for that?! That's about what I sold my 2003 Fuji Superlite w/ Ksyrium and Dura Ace for in 2008.

Well, another one down the drain.... The bike was infact a 60cm and the top tube was just to far of a reach for me.

It had a replacement Reynolds carbon fiber fork, and the crank was swapped out for a triple, and a long cage rd. The bike was in good condition, but just too big, and I was not comfy not knowing if this bike had been in a head-on into something and that being the reason for the fork replacement. I will continue my search......
