If you could only have one wheelset, what would it be?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ok, road wheelset, avg weight 175, no racing, no commuting, no trails, daily rides on avg roads and fast group rides on the weekends, needs to last too. Thoughts?

ZIPP 404 clinchers w/aluminum brake track and powertap on the rear (if you don't have a quarq or srm).

HED Ardennes, but that's not a strong preference, I just like the wide rim. Any decent alloy clincher <1500gm/set would be fine.

That sounds like a valid money-no-object answer!

for under $500, Boyd 30mm Rolleur.

If we're spending other people's money, I'd pass by the HEDs and go straight to the Zipp 101s. Of course, if we're talking about my money, yeah, HED.

Nothing lasts if you actually ride.

Just get whatever fits in your budget and looks good to you.

Ok, say 500 tops, doesn't need to last forever, just many yrs with min service. The question was because If i sell everything I have, 2004 kysrium ssc sl, bontrager rxl 2011, Aeolus 5.0/9.0 full carbon and older Bontranger paired spoke 16 all good wheels, what would you get and why? Thx

If your budget is 500 bucks, I would suggest Williams system 30 be on the short list.

They are reasonably light, a little aero, and quite durable.

You may wish to consider a pair of handbuilts too.

I'm a big fan of the classic 32/32 wheelset with Open Pros, Aeroheads, etc. In fact, the wheelset I mainly ride is a Reflex Ceramic (just before Open Pro) with Mavic hubs. The front's been in service since the late 80s/early 90s and is still going round and round. The rear rim and spokes too, but the hub's been replaced with a cassette 571/2 instead of the 501 that was on there.

Other notables include a 600/Sun Mistral front wheel that's even older than the wheel above. Still goes round and round... The rear was taco-ed by my now ex- or I'd still be riding em as a pair.

If you stick to loose ball hubs, you can rebuild em about as many times as you need to to keep em running. Relube em in the spring, inspect the races and replace the bearings and ride em all year.

https://www.neuvationcycling.com/wheels.html

I currently ride the M28X's and they're pretty close to bombproof. 1800 miles of salt, wind, potholes, squirrels (yes, squirrels), rain and puddles, deep puddles, pedal-soaking puddles, dirt, rocks, stones, and sand later and both wheels are perfectly true with no needed adjustment.

You could opt for the R28X's or R28XSL's if you would prefer something a little lighter, or of course the R tubulars if you're into that sort of thing.

I've heard good things about Neuvation's carbon wheels also, but my pocket isn't deep enough to bring them home at the moment.

Maybe he'll notice I've been proclaiming my satisfaction with his products all over town and the web and send me a set.

Edit: Just wanted to add one of my favorite things about owning these wheels... they come with bright-neon-yellow rim tape which makes it super easy to see if your tube is pinched or if there's something wrong with your wheelbed, i.e. debris, scratches, etc. I don't think many people would even notice this, but it means a lot to me.

Good set of hand built wheels from Psimet, or another good wheel builder.

Why not just keep your favorite and sell two or three of the other sets? Then again, somebody less frugal than me needs to stimulate the economy...

Only one set? Kinlin XR-300 rims, Sapim CR-Ray spokes, Alchemy Elf/Orc hubs (or other hugh quality) 24f radial, 28r 2x. Honestly I wish Kinlin would update their offerings to wider rim profiles as is seemingly becoming a new standard. I would assemble them myself.

Edit: Just saw the $500 price point. You won't get into the Alchemy hubs at your price point so swap the hubs for Formula RB66/210, bicyclehubstore.com Superlight hubs or Soul Prodigy hubs (though I don't know if you can get them in 24/28).

I'm about that. I have the HEDs (Bastognes, but they use Ardennes type rims; they're the low spoke count version). They're my go-to wheels for all-round riding. I have Jets (Jet 6 front, Jet 9 rear) and Stingers (6s, front/rear), and use them for specific reasons, but will set them aside otherwise.

I figure the wheels should last me 5+ years. Maybe 10? I'm sure I'll get new wheels long before these are done. My prior wheels are all under other riders - my Reynolds DV46 clinchers (bought them used, used them 2 years, been 2 years under a teammate), my Campy Eurus (had a double flat at 45 mph, bought them 7? years ago, under a taller/bigger former teammate for 4 years), Spinergy Rev-Xs (gave away a slew of them). I've kept most of the rest of my prior wheels, including wheels I built or bought around 1989-1997.

2 out of 20 said hand built, I thought there would be more? I do ride what I have, alot, but will probably sell a bike or two soon and was kinda narrowing down what to get rid of. Will definitely keep the carbons, but didn't know if I am going to dump the rest and get something new or just keep another set too.
