Hello all, with all of the new threads concerning assos, deals on bonktown etc. I wanted to get a feel for what all you bikers look to spend on ordinary gear....

What do you typically/ or are willing to spend on (a)

Jersey?
Bibs?
Eyewear?

Right now....I am looking at a profit jersey that retails for 170 that is on sale for 140...would you spend 140 on a jersey?

I wouldn't do it. I buy cheap jerseys and shorts on sale. The jerseys I buy are about $25.00 each. They have solid color and no graphics on them which is fine for me because I don't ride to make a fashion statement, I ride for for fitness and because it is fun.

However, everyone is different. If the $140 jersey makes you happy and you get a lot of use out of it, go for it.

Young people are conformists more than older people. Fashion goes to them. Take a look at the billboards. Madison Avenue knew this long ago.

Given that I still have, and wear, jerseys from a decade ago, I think it would be okay to spend $140.00 on a jersey. But realistically, I have lots of $50.00 jerseys that I love.

I really can't wrap my head around what qualities a $140 jersey offer that my under $50 jerseys can't provide. But if you have the money and want to spend it, why not?

I recently bought my first pair of assos bibs. I like my hammer bibs just as well as I like the assos. My typical jersey is in the $60 range. My glasses are around $200 and they last me many years.

Glasses are usually what I will splurg on a bit more since eyes are a critical point. The quality of the lens is important to me over jargon filled marketing hype. The ability to see well with no chromatic abberations, distortion, headaches is paramount.
That said, I like some Bolle glasses, Smith and Oakley's. Assos just came out with a pair of Zeiss spec'd eyewear for $450-ish.
Assos or Descent bibs and any thing jersys with wicking.

How much did your assos bibs cost vs. the hammer bibs? Would you buy the assos again?

Jersey? - up to $30, but most are walmart athletic shirts

Bibs? - nope

Eyewear? any polarized sunglasses, $20 (sale shopping). Clear safety goggles for night riding, up to $10

I couldn't bring myself to do that, unless I was racing and thought it would psyche the competition.

The assos were well over $200, the hammers were around $85-90. I highly doubt I will buy any more assos products.

On average, I would say I spend $60 on jerseys, $100 on bib shorts, $75 on shorts (for commute), $200 on shoes, and $50 on glasses. I lose or break glasses fairly regularly, so I hate to lose an expensive one.

I tend to splurge on gloves, socks, and base layers, because they are next to my skin and I want them to be perfect and comfortable. I would say my socks averages to about $15, gloves about $45, and $30 for short sleeve base layers.

I spend the most on my bibs I have bibs that are 200... bought on sale though so I paid a lot less but I'd buy them at 200... they're worth it on long rides

I have a nice set of jawbones bought them when they were first released and I love them no need to replace them.

I think the best spot to spend money on accessories is your shoes and bibs... shoes usually last a long time but a great comfy pair of bibs is worth it for long rides

Ah, you've got me pegged and speak truly. :fred: But seriously even in the summer and quite a few miles without it I'd say the same. I'd spend $170 on a jersey to mess with someone's head but not otherwise.

I like Giordana bibs. Ribble usually has a scorching deal on them so I don't spent much there. $40 for Silverline, $80 for Forma. Jerseys I get on sale, don't care much what they look like. Where I do spend money is on tires. I did find a place in Germany with Veloflex Roubaix for $70. About 1/3 off retail. I bought a bunch.

Jersey- up to $100 if I found a really nice one I thought would last for years, but I usually pay no more than $60.
Bibs- up to $300 if I found a sweet pair that were incredibly comfortable and would last at least a few years. Usually spend about $120.
Shoes- up to $300 but they should last at least 5 years or longer and be insanely comfortable and stiff.
Glasses- up to $250 but must be high quality and last for several years. (I wear contacts so glasses are very important to me)
Notice the bibs, shoes, and glasses are what ill spend the most on because those can make the difference between a sweet enjoyable ride and misery. The jersey isn't nearly as important in my opinion unless its for cold weather and keeps you out there riding.
It is all about what you think is worth it and if you have the money to spend.

The most expensive jersey I bought was $60, and that's because it was the cheapest one that the only bike store around had, and I needed one. I won't spend more than $100 on a jersey and bibs combined.

Eyewear is the one thing I won't skimp on, it's a combination of me needing an Rx and me having a use for eyepro outside of cycling, so I go Oakley, but that's personal preference.

I usually shop at Longcycle's grab bag for jerseys. Shorts at Performance. Don't much care for bibs. the shoulder straps get to me after about 40 or 50 miles, its like torture.

obviously old people never experienced youth, therefore conformity does not exist within old people populations. bf logic wins again.

I'd go over $200 on bibs for Assos...but you can get FI Uno for $155 at totalcycling.com.
I rarely if ever go over $100 on a Jersey...I hate spending that much but if I found something I really wanted I would.
Eye ware...I really want some nice Oakleys but don't want to lay out the cash. I'm currently riding with a pair of Tifosi I got from Performance on sale.

I am cheap 50 or under on jerseys, shorts 75, glasses about 120. i love my smith sliders so many lenses.

I must be cheap. I'm riding with $40 bibs, $23 shorts, and none of my jerseys were more than $25. I did spend $50 on a pair of tights, though, but when it's cold outside, I can't imagine being without them.

Most of my jerseys were less than $50. I have a couple that were a little more but they came from unique events or places.

My line on bibs is 100 miles. Most of my bibs are made by Voler. My club gets them at a decent discount. They're fine up to 100. I can't think of any ride over 125 miles that I've worn them on.

I have a few pair of Assos bibs that I use for long rides. To me they're worth it.

I suggest you look at joining a club. Most offer discounted kit.

We have a Pearl Izumi outlet store nearby so I get a lot of off season stuff there for really good prices. I could care less what the stuff looks like as long as it is good quality and fits.

I really want to drop some serious change on a really good cold weather cycling jacket but it is hard to justify the cost. My $80 Foxwear jacket worked just fine today for 30 miles at temps under 20 f.

Jersey - up to about $60. Be patient and you will find nice ones on sale all the time.
Bibs - both pairs of mine cost about $65 each. I would probably go up to about $100 if I knew they would be awesome.
Sunglasses - Target el cheapos. Usually Ironman or Foster Grant...never more than about $20.
Shoes - just bought a pair for $129.
Helmet - been wearing my $30 Bell for over a year. I really don't understand $200 helmets.
Socks - cheap moisture wicking from Target, like $10 for 3 pair.
