how serious are you about diet

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

how serious are you about diet

I just want to get a feel for how often you measure/quantify/think about your meals (and overall diet). I find myself analyzing each and every meal quantifying calories/carbohydrates and protein. I also watch portions for every meal.... Is this normal, or do I have an obsession/disorder?

Sounds a little obsessive but if you enjoy your meals and are staying fit- then whats the problem.

I tried doing that, but I'm a firm believer that counting/quantifying your diet just leads to being burnt out. Personally, just being aware of the caloric intake that is needed, being educated about the nutrition I need for the physical activity I want to do, reducing fats/sugars and allowing myself to cheat is my recipe for success. Sitting there with a silly "point" system like weight watchers is, well, silly.

I am using map my ride and I have been putting my nutrition information in it. Although when I look at the charts for my intake I am all over the place. My fat is over the daily need and my protein is over the daily need. Although I can't take enough calories to meet my daily need with my workouts. The other problem I have is I eat out a lot ( I have few kitchen skills and a small kitchen) and foods I eat just don't have nutrition information. It is just like my BMI (Body Mass Index) it says that with my height and weight I am over weight although I hardly have any fat on me. Without talking to a sports nutritionist or doctor I really don't know if I am doing the right thing.

What I do, I don't weigh myself except monday mornings. I eat when I am hungry, never unless I feel real hunger. I eat healthy but allow myself one treat a day. I do not snack, I do not drink. My shopping in the supermarket is around the perimeter- fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh meat , fish or chicken. I never, ever, eat until I am full and generally take in about half of the average american serving or less( as compared to typical restaurant portions. I never shop in the center of the store where the shelves are, processed food almost always means High Fructose Corn Syrup which I believe is part of the problem.

My wife could have written your post word-for-word (almost, because we weigh ourselves more often). I'll guarantee that her efforts have helped the two of us maintain our weight (which, for me, is around 40-50 pounds lighter than two years ago, which was also before we met).

If/when I need to lose weight I religiously count calories. I'm pretty casual and qualitative about the rest of the nutritional information.

Yes, you have an obsession/disorder.

But this is the 41, so yes, that is normal.

I'll add that I've also counted calories, and that's what kicked my weight loss into gear two years ago. I learned that I could either keep eating the regular junk except a lot less of it, or I could eat decent-sized meals of healthy, real food.

Not at this time of the year. In January I'll start to get a little bit picky, and by March be quite strict. That'll continue until cross season looms, and I start to eat in a more relaxed fashion. I don't mind if I'm five or ten over racing cross...well maybe not ten. Then I start to feel a bit uncomfortable.

I find that I have to count calories and keep track of things, because I ride a lot and end up sick and/or overtrained otherwise. I'm also a vegetarian though, so that might be part of it.

I always watch the quality of food I eat with an eye on quantity in season. This time of year, I am an obsessive calorie counter.

I'm currently eating a pizza. I'll probably eat the whole thing. I just ride enough to counter act my eating. If I need to lose weight for an event or some, I may control my eating for a month or so, but I mostly ride so I can eat how I like.

I'm about to go on to my famous no booze, pasta, or bread diet. Just lean meat, vegetables, fruit, nuts and cheese. Works really well. I want to drop 40 pounds. If I drop 20 I'll be lighter than since high school.

If you're training during this time you're going to want some good carbs, too!

I am your exact opposite. I LOVE to cook and eat and do not even think about any of this stuff. I do eat a lot of veggies, generally fresh, and don't use a lot of cheese or butter - but some- and find myself planning my next meal while cleaning up after my last. Is this normal, or do I have an obsession/disorder? I ride/exercise to build up an appetite.

What's for dinner?

I ride and run to eat and drink what I wish. I do weight every Monday to keep an eye on my weight. If I look up and see that I have gained 3 or more pounds, I will either curb the diet slightly or ride/run more. My wife is a fantastic cook. We eat a ton of seafood/fish, homemade pastas, mexican foods, Indian, and homemade sushi. I usually eat peanut butter sandwiches for lunch. I also have a piece of pie or cake every night with a big glass of milk. My sweet tooth is what gets me in trouble.

I weigh myself a few times a year, and I don't like eating fresh fruit. But I also don't have much of a sweet tooth, and I'm not huge on starchier vegetables (potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc) and I've developed a lactose intolerance recently. However I love to eat meat, most vegetables, noodles and rice. I usually snack on mixed nuts at work. And I like drinking beer. So that's what I do.

The only thing I consciously try to avoid is soda. I love root beer, birch beer, Dr. Pepper and similar such products but those are a slippery slope.
