Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What stops you cycling?

I've lost both my garage keys and can't get near the loved ones. Got a new torque wrench to play with too. Ripoff locksmith beckons!

first two I'lll agree on, but now and again in the warmer months a few of us will ride 30+miles to a bar for a couple beers, and the required water and time to offset said beers sufficiently then ride home. my big one lately is lyme disease, makes it tough to pedal when your knee is looking and sometimes feeling like its been blown up.

The 80 mph winds predicted for Los Angeles for the next three days. Mixing that and a bike does not sound fun!

When the winds start whipping up to 20mph or more. Working the night before and not getting sleep. If it's colder than 45(F), although I went out this weekend and it was 42. Rain.

Burning my left foot to the bone stopped me for almost 3 months in 2001.

DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) in my left leg stopped me for about 3 months in 2009.

Those are the only two times I've stopped cycling for any significant amount of time in the past 21.5 years.

How ? Easy. Deer tick bites person and transmits lyme disease.

well I didn't know that was the ONLY way. I clearly said I knew deer ticks transmitted it, but wasn't sure if that was it. I guess it's all personal though. I'm nyquiled up right now which might as well be drunk...

Definitely the cold. I did Tough Mudder in NJ a couple of weeks ago and that put me out for the entire winter. I'd rather just hit the bag at the gym or jump rope when it's cold.

Injury and work. Weather in San Diego is never a factor.

Sub-30 degree temperature in the early morning has completely killed my 5:30 fitness ride. I now struggle to get up at 6:00 and hop on the trainer.

Besides the obvious and oft-repeated cold and inclement weather, plain old darkness; this time of the year, I go to work when it's dark and get home after the sun goes down. My town isn't safe for cyclists after dark - drivers sometimes can't see bicyclists even in broad daylight - add in the cold weather, and its just too miserable and dangerous.

Same here in Boston, though I would add illness, as distinct from injury.
