Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Happened to me on a recent 7-mile commute w/ temps in the low 20s & windchill close to single digits. Water not completely frozen, but very chunky by the end of the ride. Probably helped that I filled my water bottle with very cold water from the refri before starting.

Re gloves, when it's that cold, I use felt-lined neoprene ice fishing gloves. No problem shifting with brifters. Hands usually a little sweaty at the end of the ride.

I have a pair of these and they are great. I wear them down to single digits with liners. My only complaint is that I like to hook my index fingers on the hoods when I climb. It's a fair trade-off for the warmth of lobster gloves. Yesterday I started a ride with long 5-fingered cycling gloves (40F). Ended up switching to the swix gloves 5 miles in and was glad I stuffed them in my back pocket "just in case".

Mine freeze about 1/3 into the ride. Now I put them in my jersey pocket under my jacket. I have to stop to get them out & drink, but better than no drink.

I forgot my gloves at home. My fingers were freezing for 10-15miles until the first climb.

I had a Camelbak Podium Chill freeze up at the jet 15 minutes into the ride. I had to chew to get some water. After 30 minutes the water was slush. After 1.5 hours, you weren't getting water out of that bad boy. Temperature was 9°F the other night.

I ended up picking up gloves on the ride home from the shop. I got a pair of the Bontrager RXL Waterproof Softshell Glove.

My hands were very warm for the 1.5 hour commute home. They are pricey, but damn are they nice.

Just get the stainless vacuum insulated bottles and that's never a problem. Make your tea with boiling water and it'll stay hot for many hours, even at 20 F.

Bar Mitts

These work really well once you get use to them.

These aren't the typical two-section lobster gloves. https://ecom1.planetbike.com/glove9004.html
They get a great review here https://allseasonscyclist.com/2011/11...ycling-gloves/
Windproofing is more important than inches of insulation. High-loft ski gloves can get compressed after a season, losing their effectiveness.

How do you ride in the drops? How do you change hand position and ride on the tops?

I had PI lobster gloves, and they were the warmest, but I couldn't shift with them, so I returned them.

It was 24 here yesterday morning, and my fingers were FROZEN by the end of my half hour sprint ride. I had smartwool liners under my Cyclone gloves. Fail!

I may buy the PI non-lobster winter gloves, nothing worse than frozen fingers on a ride!

Shifting is not a problem with lobster gloves or with mittens. Something with a decent wind shell works well. I use PI lobster gloves with shell -- circa 1991 or so -- for temps under 35. I've used them when temps have been in the teens and they are fine. My ski mittens are also good. You might think about nordic skiing gloves.

Not a problem for you, but lobster gloves didn't work with my Campy brifters.
