Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Max HR

How does one empirically determine max heart rate. I'm not looking for the age determined formula and I'm too cheap to buy the book. I ride past the book value
but would like to know where I stand.

I think this topic has been covered before, and the maximums varied a bit, regardless of age.

That's about right! In one of the CTS DVDs they get you to measure your HR before doing anything. On the trainer it's 8 minutes flat out, hard as you can - BUT you need to go the full 8 minutes. Then you spin easy for 10 minutes, then repeat the 8 minute hammerfest. The highest reading from both intervals is your max HR. Supposedly

by the way, mine's 204, and I'm 37.

It used to be 202 until I tried to chase and kill a truck driver that nearly hit me

No problem. It's Friday and I'm in a great mood. To stay on topic, my max hr (that I've seen is 198).

I've seen 202. I went to the gym and got on a treadmill. Warmed up for 15 minutes and then started cranking up the speed and incline. Just like American Flyers!

When I do my max vo2 test tomorrow, I'll get my max HR and post it here. I'm predicting Max vo2 of 60-65 ml/kg/min and HR over 200.

It is impossible to measure your maximum possible heartrate. You simply can't push yourself as hard under controlled conditions (wearing a monitor and trying to figure out your HR) as you can under extreme conditions (e.g. being chased by a bear)

That said, you can calculate your max training HR using MacMan's method or by going 4 minutes as hard as you can sustain for those 4 minutes, followed by 4 minutes at an easy recovery pace, then 4 on, 4 off, 4 on again. At the end of your third 4 minute maximal effort, watch your HR for its peak. The important thing is that you will peak AFTER the effort, not during. I've had a couple sprint finishes where I hit 197 or 198 during the sprint, but peaked at 199 or 200 a couple seconds after.

I am 49 years old. I did the hill test a few years ago and got 176. Then I rode a time trial a few months later and at the top of mile-long climb I was at 184! The thrill of competition, I guess.

Which number should I use for setting training ranges?

At age 60, hit 183 on a controlled test/treadmill in a science lab.
15 minutes later, pulse was 52.

I'll be running on a treadmill with a nose-plug on and a 2 way ventilator in my mouth that measures how much oxygen I consume and how much CO2 I expell. They increase the speed and the incline at certain intervals.

It so happens that the test is on my birthday, and I'm convinced that I'm going to give that SOB all I've got and more. I'm going to break their machine or it will break me.

Was that done here in Tucson?
If so, where?

In a time trial have seen 210, but during a max test in the lab a week later I could only manage 196.

I'm only 31, unfit and overweight so that might account for some of the variance
