Hi
A month ago my bike got stolen. A 96/97 Cannondale R900. Thanks to insurance, and savings, I ended up with my new bike, a Cannondale CAAD5 R500. I upgraded the stock wheels for mavic cxp 33s and ultegra hubs with the cash I had left over. This bike is @#^!ing awesome!! Two weeks after I got the new one I actually spotted my stolen bike at someone’s home so report it to the police, and they got my bike back (with missing parts but at least now I have a winter bike).
Now that I've ridden the old one and the new Cannondale I can tell you that the new Cannondales are out of this freaking world. I used to really love my old Cannondale, but the caad5 frame makes it look like a joke. They strip material Caad after caad, weighing less, and putting material where the frame needs it most. When you flick the tubing you can hear the difference, its pretty cool – try it if u have one. It’s also really thick on the down-tube which is a change from my old one. The new frames also absorbs road bumps very well (s curved seat-stay). It also has STI shifting, which is great for road bikes for obvious reasons. It also has a carbon fork which stands up to the punishment of street car tracks and pot holes in Toronto.
Bottom line is this bike is perfect for downtown...too bad it's starting to snow! Here's a picture of the R500

So are you gonna tell the insurance company that you recovered the old bike and that they can expect a check in the mail from you very soon?

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the insurance company technically own the old bike now?

If you call the adjuster, they are going to want a refund if they paid a claim. If the old bike was damaged, or parts were taken, that would have to be taken into consideration. I would offer them the old bike and then buy it back from them for at a discount.
If the insurance co. finds out you recoverd the bike and kept the claim money, they may come after you.

thanks for the comments...and yes I looked into the whole insurance thing before calling the cops. Obviously if the insurance company would own either of the bikes (particularly the new one) I would have let the bugger keep my old bike, but this isn't the case. The police also kept a record for themselves
As for the bike, I've had a few more rides in recently since the weather has calmed down recently. Too much fun... I also saw a softride rocket road bike, they look pretty awesome up close but there's something about them that just looks awkward, I'd hate to be sitting on that thing when the softride beam snaps
