Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just checking in on this thread again.

Nice to hear from all the other military cyclists, active duty or prior service. Thanks to all those who have shown their support and appreciation - your prayers are well received!

It's about 8 and a half months into my deployment so far, with just a few left. I got to come home on R&R a couple months ago and build up my dream bike. Can't wait to come home and really put it through its paces!

21 years active here. Did some time in Iraq and got back Dec 2011 after we shut everything down.

Some action shots of me doing another thing I love to do:

Good pics of the band. Thanks so much for your service and for protecting our freedoms. Where are you stationed when you are in the real world? If you get to Eglin/Hurlburt/Tyndale shoot me a P.M. maybe we can get together.

Bill,

I've been stationed in San Diego my entire career. My present duty station is MCAS Miramar Hoorah!

My bad, I misread your post, thought you were an Air Scout. Plenty of Naval installations here to see. I spend most of my time at NAS Whiting Field or NAS Pensacola. See the anchor on your cammies now. Thanks for serving Chief.

Made it back earlier this month, but still not really back on the bike. I sprain my ankle the end of June, and wasn't diagnosed properly, so in a "boot" for another two weeks; and even then potentially surgery to repair torn tendon's ...But all things considered... I'm back in one piece...

Colonel,
Glad you got back whole and mobile, even if it is as a gimp for a bit. Hope the ankle heals well, completely and soon. They can be a real eye-poker, I have broken both ankles and it sucks. Look forward to ride reports form you when you are back on the bike.

BianchiGirl, I didn't know you were in country. I must have missed a post in the C&V forum. Stay safe!

Well DAMN it!

My wife and I sent a package to 'robncircus' in Afghanistan many months ago, but I have just learned that he never got the package!

f***ing APO/FPO has done this to me a few times. I should have checked sooner.

Anyway robncircus will be returning home in a few weeks (thanks again for your service, Robert).

I now have a collection of magazines going back about 7 or 8 months. If any service man or woman is on deployment out of country and is a serious cyclist, and could use these magazines (and a bunch of cool goodies that we'll also send), please let me know here in this thread, or PM me.

Duncan,
You might offer these magazines to someone deployed to other areas. I have a C&V member I will be sending a monthly package to, as I do for jtwilson in the 'Stan now, that will be on Diego Garcia in January. these guys and gals appreciate them too as you well know from your service. BTW, thanks for your service and for offering the magazines up.

I too have a slew of magazines I've aquired overseas. If anyone is interested PM and let me know.

Cheers

Thanks. I am not going to be here long so I never posted in the C&V section.

Will do so with pleasure - but I need to know who they are, and where.

Seems you have jtwilson and the C&V person covered - but if anyone becomes aware of any other service men or women who are cyclists and who don't already get magazines, please let me know and my wife and I will be happy to forward them - along with lots of other goodies.

Duncan,
I just replied to this thread saying I would do this for the first service member to respond to the offer. jtwilson jumped on it fast and we were off to the (bicycle) races. The C&V member I am going to send the mags to is DrilliumDude, he is a Senior Chief headed to Diego Garcia at the end of the year. You might send him a P.M. asking if he knows of a young Seaman or Petty Officer being deployed. He is a really great guy. Glad you support these service members, I am sure you understand better than most.

I was US Army Active for 24 years, '86-'10. Infantryman, most of my career was in the 82nd Airborne. Panama, Desert Storm, OIF three tours, OEF one tour. In one month I'll have been retired two years. Seems like I'm just on a long PCS leave.

I'm a real short timer here and will be home soon. I want to say what you all are doing is great and we really appreciate it. I'm in Kabul and the camp I'm on has a huge spinning group so trust me we are out there. I spent most of my time sweating it out to Sufferfest...

Just wanted to say thanks to those of you that support us. I have spent 3 years deployed and can vouch that receiving mail is one of the things that keeps Soldiers going. Great to see the cycling community support our troops.

Frisbie, are you still deployed? If so, where are you posted? How long have you been there, and when do you come home?

Just for OPSEC purposes, he probably shouldn't answer those questions on a public forum. Just sayin'.
