I did four years in the Army with the 101st as a medic with 1/506 infantry, deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. I'm new to cycling (still looking for a road bike, but should have one soon), but these rides to support Wounded Warrior and other charities seem like a lot of fun. I'll have to check them out.

14 years in the Army. Been all over, to include some crappy desert like places. In DC now, and it is nice to be somewhere that I can ride whenever I want, on some pretty decent infrastructure (compared to where I've been). I am happy to pitch in for the guys and gals that are still out there...I'm not now, but I know what its like.

Hi Badger, I'll kick in with a big heartfelt THANK YOU to you for serving! The paycheck is just part of reality, career military service like you, Rich and all the others takes real dedication, you have to take the great times with the suck and make memories that stick with you for ever.

Remembering my brothers and sisters in arms serving today as they strive to keep America safe. Rembering the helpless victims of that terrible day 14 years ago and those that sacrificed all attempting to assist the victims.
And remembering my fellow Soldiers, the Marines, Airmen, Sailors, and Coast Guardmen who have sacrified since, and the families who loved and supported them.
Take a knee, grip hands and remember what we lost, who did it, and most importantly, our Nation's resolve that states clearly, 'Never Again!'

My wife's best friend lost her son at the Pentagon that day; R.I.P. Lcdr Otis Tolbert. Have no doubt if they could do it again they would. History is filled with acts of indescribable horror all done in the name of God.

Any currently deployed BF members that would like some home support?
Both of the guys I sent stuff to are now safely on U.S. soil.

So how does this work in 'Stan? Do you guys have a handful of bikes in various sizes that you borrow, or do you guys bring your own with you?

A big thank you to the great guys that started this thread and an even bigger thank you to those that serve! After two tours in Vietnam, I don't cycle as fast or as far as I did when I was a teen, but I seem to enjoy and appreciate it a lot more!

Currently deployed to Afghanistan (FOB Walton). I don't really need anything but wanted to say thank you for this community's support and thoughts for the men and women that serve.

Walton. Brings back memories....mostly ambivalent about them, though. Enjoy your stay, be safe.

I was active duty Army from '86-'10 in the infantry. Spent most of my career at Bragg, also did a tour in Hawaii, drill sergeant and Princeton Univ ROTC instructor. Fought in Panama, Desert Storm, one tour OEF and three tours OIF. Finally started letting my hair grow out this summer, it's kind of weird haha. It just feels like I'm on a long vacation instead of being retired. Been back at home since I got out but in a few months I'm moving to Laurinburg, NC to be near my daughter forever. I'll be about 30 minutes from Bragg and plan to start riding with my old cycling club again.

Chris, I just saw this, how is the cycling (especially commuting) in Stuttgart? Looks very likely that the Army will move me there next summer to one of the staffs. Want to commute by bike as frequently as possible.

Pick where you live carefully and you'll be fine traffic here is nightmare. It's probably easier to commute if you come to AFRICOM it's less congested than EUCOM even though on the map it doesn't look like it would be. The cycling community has grown greatly in the 5 years I've been here and seems to grow faster everyday we even have bike to work week events now. When it get closer to time let me know I'll fill in where the sponsor (sunshine and roses) leaves off. There are a few realtors you should avoid etc. If you are married this facebook group should be one to follow also https://www.facebook.com/groups/stuttgartfriends/
I work for the Garrison DPTMS we're kinda of a 2/3/6 shop put together so if you have questions I can give you both the official and the how things work answers to most of your questions.

Thanks for the info! I'm still in "negotiation" with the assignment manager. He may hold me off to '15 based on some other factors, but trying to go sooner not later. I'll save the contact info.
