Can anyone confirm if the Specialized Roubaix family have a BB30?

Thanks Currently the SL3 Pro SRAM, SL3 Pro, SL3 Pro Di2 and S-Works models have the OSBB...and the S-Works frame set (but not the SL3 Pro frame set). Campag4Life posted a pdf from Specialized in another thread that listed which frames have exactly which BB standard in them. |

Again it doesn't really matter if it is BB30 or PF30. BB30 uses an aluminum sleeve in the BB that is machined to tight tolerances and the bearings are pressfit into it. PF30 is the same width and uses the same 30mm spindle cranks but the aluminum sleeve in the BB is omitted the the BB assembly has a delrin cup set that is pressed into the frame. They went this way because the frame tolerances don't need to be nearly as tight and the delrin cups should help reduce the creaking issues many people have had with BB30 and other pressfit standards.

I'm using a KCNC adapter on my BB30 frame and it works very well with my Ultegra 6750 crankset.

X...because of the confusion of what BB a Roubaix can have relative to model and year, best to post with what bike you are interested in and ask. Its not really straightforward. Will give you an example and G-chopper touched on this. Take the Roubaix Pro that I just built. The 'frameset' ordered from Specialized is threaded...one of the reasons I went with it. The complete Pro bike however is what they call OSBB which is BB30. This is because Specialized crankset that comes on the Roubaix Pro complete bike...the Spesh crank only uses BB30 or PF-30. FWIW all Specialized S-works bikes are PF-30. Given a choice, I prefer threaded first...because I don't put out the watts to need the 1% stiffer BB30 ;)...and prefer PF-30 second. PF-30 is a bit more resilient to making noise for an integrated BB.

What Campag said... the answer is you will find both types of bottom bracket in 2010-2012. If the spec sheet for the model you are looking at on specialized.com says the bottom bracket is "Threaded", it's not BB30. If it says "OSBB", it is BB30.

My SL2 (2012) has a normal 68mm bottom bracket from what I can tell.

i was about to start a thread obout this...
currently i ride a 2011 sl3 roubaix and will upgrade to a 2011 sworks sl3 roubaix (HTC). i read somewhere the htc version is bb30, but that doesn't sound right... i wonder what are my options now..will i need to buy an adapter? new cranks? its a bit confusing.... @Grassshoper - im also lusting over some rotor cranks! they look so sweet! |
I just got a Tarmac Pro SL4 and it has the alloy BB30 style.
It came with cups to use a shimano crank and I ordered some for SRAM GXP. Very easy to install and no problems/noise yet (but only ~500 miles or so). I do have my concerns with the design since it all just slips together with tight tolerances, but time will tell. To me, the threaded BB's seem like there is less opportunity for issues. |

What that means for you if moving your cranks over to the new bike is...they will be plug and play...no adapters needed...or...if they are external threaded bearing cranks on your '11 bike with adapters...just bring all hardware over to your new SL3. The reason for this is...BB-30 and PF-30 is interchangable for cranksets...cranks can't tell the difference between the two...same spacing and same bearing ID. :)

This is a close up of the Roubaix Pro osbb area. I don't see an "indent" where the bearings will stay put for the Shimano 105 crankset, so I'm thinking I need - to install a Shimano press fit - then install the bearings - then install the Wheels Mft. bb30 adapter kit. Am I close? The frame pictured is 68mm English threaded. Currently if you buy a Roubaix SL3 Pro frameset you will get a threaded BB...if you buy the S-Works frameset you will get OSBB. The SRAM RED Pro and DA Pro SL3 non S-Works models for 2012 DO have OSBB...but the Ultegra model is threaded. Personally if I had a OSBB frame I would run a BB30 crankset and not try to adapt it back to threaded for Shimano or Campy cranks with 24mm spindles. IF I was going to run a Shimano crankset I would go with an adapter more like this one (shown above by M_Wales): http://fairwheelbikes.com/parlee-bb3...et-p-4500.html or this one: http://fairwheelbikes.com/kcnc-bb30-...et-p-2926.html I don't like the WheelsMfg concept of an adapter in the BB30 bearings. OP, as others have said, it really is a frame-by-frame issue, unless you are talking S-Works.
Last year, when I purchased my wife a Tarmac SL3 Pro frameset, I was asked whether I wanted the standard BB or the OSBB, as Spec. offered both options for that frame in the color she wanted. |
You're both absolutely right. I've gotten down to the bottom of things and the frame is confirmed to have an OSBB.
So now my options are a bb30 crank or adapters. I'm slowly getting it now. Thanks |
