do durable cycling gloves exist?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

do durable cycling gloves exist?

i had a nice pair of cannondale road cycling gloves. they barely made it through a season.

my kona mountain bike gloves (which i use for moderately cold road cycling) has a tear through the leather thumb pad. these aren't going to last much longer.

does anyone make cycling gloves that last or should i expect gloves to last about as long as tires?

I'm not sure how you are using your gloves but I bet most people will tell you that their gloves last quite a long time - years.

10 Wheels got it right. If you want plush comfortable gloves then don't expect it to last. But if what you are looking for is durability then your solution can be found at your local hardware store.

I haven't had a single specialized glove die on me.

I've got 13000 miles on a pair of padded PI gloves. I wash them when they get really nasty, but other wise no special care. They have many miles remaining. How many road miles in your season?

From the LBS, made in Bangladesh - one season, barely.

Pearl Izumi - many years. And comfortable.

I get two season - barely - out of my leather crochet-backed jobbies. Made by Axiom, which is Norco, who is just putting their name on them.

I haven't had any gloves ever get to the point where they were unusable, but eventually they get really tired and worn looking and it's nice to buy a fresh pair. Right now I'm on a pair of Specialized gloves for about 3 years now. I'll probably replace them this next year whenever I see something I like.

My all time faves were the Spenco gloves made in the 80's. Nice gel padding and a classic crochet back. I can't find gloves like those anymore, though there are a few crochet back models around.

I prefer full fingered gloves even in Florida summers. If you can do the same, then try more durable motocross gloves. I also like the leather gloves made by Knog with basically a second piece of leather stitched in the palm without padding.

Specialized gloves work pretty well for me, though I've had one pair on which the velcro stopped sticking. I generally replace them when they get so funky that washing them won't remove the stank any more. Pearl Izumi were awful.

I stopped using natural leather gloves a long time ago for the same reason. Synthetic gloves last me a long time compared to leather. When they get funky I throw them in the washer and can still get a few years out of them.

Any pair of true bike-specific gloves should last nearly forver. My $15 gloves from Performance bike are now 3 years old and have been through 2 spills, both of which they took a fair amount of impact, which shredded the surface of the thicker padding of the palm, but is still completely usable.

In contrast, I run a lot with a BOB stroller which has foam handles, and I unwittingly used regular Nike running gloves on those. It's not like I put much pressure at all on the bars, but within 3 months, I was surprised to see I'd worn a hole in the palm of the gloves from the friction. Now it's bike gloves for those as well.

Yes, they do exist. If you buy several pairs and alternate wearing them they last much longer. Hand wash them occasionally too, as dirt and sweat accelerate wear.

?? Yet to wear a pair out myself. Heck on the road my grip is so light for 90% of my riding that I don't see how I'd wear them out? Do you ride with a death grip or something?? Are you sizing them right?

I tend to keep two or three sets of gloves in the rotation. My guess is that each pair lasts about a year. Two max.

Smallguy...tell me more about the motocross gloves you're wearing. I'm always intrigued by cheaper alternatives.
