foot cramp

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

foot cramp

The past 2 rides Ive done, Ive gotten cramps in my right foot in the arch. This doesnt happen when I wear normal shoes on my hybrid, only when Im clipped into my road bike. Has anyone else ever had this happen or might know why this would be?

How far were your rides and what was the intensity like in comparison to your rides on your hybrid? My guess is it is just exertion cramps from increasing your efforts and output. Watch your fluids (hydration)and electrolytes and as your fitness improves the cramps will most likly go away too.

The first time was last week and it happened around the second mile. I wasnt pushing very hard at all as my 10 year old was with me. The second time was yesterday during the first mile of warm up on my trainer. I got off, massaged my foot for a few mintes, got back on and it happened again. If it had been my legs, I wouldnt have thought twice about it, but in the arch of my foot? I wear carbon soled Bontrager shoes.

What had you done for the 24 hours prior to the rides - been running or swimming or other such activites as a workout. It wouldn't seem that in 2 easy miles your shoes could make that much of a difference. Do you wear inserts in your ohter shoes that are not in your clip-on shoes?

I had the same problem and discovered I was tightening the velcro and cam buckles just a tad too tight. I loosened them and got some "wiggle room" and the cramping went away.

Sounds like it could be a shoe fit problem...your "normal" shoes and your cycling shoes fit differently. I could see cramping happening quickly in a ride if your shoes are too narrow. Per ronnylee61's suggestion, try loosening everything up first.

I dont wear inserts and I havent done anything out of the norm. Ive ridden with these shoes many times without the cramping. I will try loosening them tomorrow. Thanks.

+1 I used to get cramps in my feet after about 10 miles on my 25 mile rides. I now spike my water bottles with Hammer Endurolytes Fizz (grapefruit). I tried some powdered stuff but it is very sugary and I can't stand sugary drinks when I ride. I also eat a Clif Shot if I ride for more than 1.5 hours. I also try to give the balls of my feet some rest, pedaling a few strokes with upward pull and no downward push. In fact, this thread reminded me that I no longer have cramp. As my fitness improved, the cramps went away. I can now do a 50 mile ride and not feel totally wiped out. I always have a protein bar after rides.

Now, if I could just score a new pair of lungs on CL or ebay :-)
