Arenberg
 

In my search for bikes, I came across an NOS 2003 Litespeed Arenberg in my size for ~$1,800 with Ultegra. Just took a test ride for fit and like the geometry, but questioning with my size (~230 lbs, 6'4") whether it's stiff enough. Since I like the geometry, I'm trying to decide between the Arenberg and the Ultimate (used). Anybody familiar with the Arenberg? Is it stiffer than the Firenze? As stiff as the Tuscany? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, D

At that kind of size, man, it's not about how stiff it is, it's about whether or not the freakin' thing'll fit you. Make sure you run over that geometry again. I've looked at Litespeeds, and they don't really seem built for tall people (6'6 myself). But you're the expert on what fits you.

When I was shopping Litespeeds, the local shop said the Arenberg was on the flexy side for anyone other than a smaller rider. I haven't ridden it though, but I did get a Classic. Given your size, it seems like the Ultimate would be a better bet. You'd probably notice the difference in stiffness with more climbing or sprinting. Do you have a fairly laid back or aggressive style of riding?

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm 6'4" but have a 35" inseam, and after being laid out all these years am looking for a shorter top tube and more upright position, and the 61cm Litespeeds seem to fit the bill. Not an aggressive rider, mostly ride by myself and try to get in ~30-35 miles a day on the weekends and a few after work rides during the week. Definately geared more towards comfort, but ride in a hilly area so would like some stiffness. Thanks, D

I thought the Arenberg was discountinued in 2003 but I could be wrong. I see a few 200+ riders who commented at RoadBikeReview.com about the Arenberg, seems as if they like the bike. Even if it was new, I think $1800 would be a little high unless it had killer wheels.

I am on the portly side 240+(not for long if I keep riding though). I purchased a firenze a few months ago, and then upgraded to a killer deal on a Tuscany. The Tuscany is much stiffer -especially at the BB and much more comfortable to ride to boot and it is definately worth the extra money. I have ridden the Arenberg and it is very, very similar to the Firenze.

I would agree with this post. I've been riding a 2002 Arenberg, but I'm a little under 160. It is stiff enough on the flats, but I think I could use some BB stiffness on hills. I would go with the Tuscany if I were you.

Thanks for everyone's input, I think I'm going to take the advice and pass on the Arenberg, and keep looking for a Tuscany (my original target, but out of my price range) and hope the Ultimate is still for sale if that fails. Thanks, D

The Ultimate, if the right size, would be a stiffer frame than either the Arenburg or the Tuscany.
Originally the frame alone was in the $2400-3000 range, depending on year of purchase. It would be a better choice for you at your size and weight. What year frame and price is the Ultimate?

two places to look in addition to your lbs-colorado cyclist & preownedbikes.com-both had great prices. Also ebay (I got my tuscany an 04 from a bike shop selling it on ebay for 2077 plus 45 shipping. It even had krysium equipes on it. Also, get the litespeed dealers lists and start calling them-if you're willing to take an 04 or 03 leftover, you might be shocked at the price you can get-call them, ask if they'll deal on your size and be willing to back it up on an order if it is a price you can afford. The deals are there if you're willing to look!!!!!
