Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

November FSW23 or Boyd Vitesse

This is the last thread I'm doing to make. After a long extensive search, it's down to these two sets, one of which I'm going to buy, one of which I'm already leaning towards. Which set is the better set? Both seem very different from each other, so help me understand which one would give the better peformance? A lot of weight from this forum will influence my decision. Thanks! Everyone has been a big help so far!

I would go with the boyds you get the slight aero advantage at the same weight plus i believe they have been doing wheels longer. Either way you will be happy.

I don't believe either is necessarily better. Aesthetically, the Boyd set is better looking, imo. Rotationally, the November set is going to be 40-60 grams lighter for the set in terms of rims(a23 rims come in slightly overweight occasionally, but will still weigh less). The Boyd set is going to be slightly lighter overall unless you are over their recommended weight for the standard build. If that's the case, it's a wash because you would need 28/24 and that would negate the already very small weight advantage of the Boyd set. In the end, I've had several sets of a23 custom wheels which is the rim November uses, and a few sets similar to the Boyd set and personally, I would choose the November set even though the Boyd set looks nicer, imo.

I'm waiting for my November 38's to come in, so I have yet to see firsthand the finished product, but I can tell you the guys at November are awesome to do business with from my experience with them. If you haven't yet, I would suggest to give them a call (or drop them an email); I'm sure they will help you with any questions you may have. These guys get it IMO.

Just want to also say in no way do I have anything bad to say about Boyd, as I've read very positive things about their wheels as well on these forums. I don't think you can go wrong either way if you ask me. I'm just saying that barring a complete disaster of a final product/lack of post-sale support if needed (or an apocolypse), the guys at November will have a return customer when I pull the trigger on a new frame or wheels in the future (their upcoming TT frame has me intrigued).

Here's something to consider if you haven't already: Do you see yourself having and using 2 sets of wheels? If so, you may want to match rim widths so you won't have to adjust your brakes everytime you swap.

For instance, if you are going to keep your aksiums (to use with a different tire or something) you may be happier with the Vitesse. Or if you see yourself getting some carbon wheels they tend to be wider and the FSW23 would be a better match.

Outside of that, I favor the FSW23. I think the wheels are close enough in weight and aero properties that it won't make much difference. But I have a wheel with each rim and I like the ride of the A23 better. In a well built wheel it probably won't matter, but I also think the standard rear hub on the november (novatec) has better dimensions than the Boyd (Bitex) that allow for a more laterally stable wheel. If you can swing it, November also will upgrade to White Industries hubs which I think is a great option.

One other thing: as you may have seen from the end of your Vitesse thread, people may want to know your weight, riding terrain and habits, bike, tires, etc. before they answer. I know you listed some of that earlier but people may not have read those threads.

I expected a fairly even split between the two.
