Speaking of the bare frames, and not this complete bike, the weight of the 58 cm all alum was 3.44 lbs, alum w/ carbon rear triangle was 3.26 lbs. I don't know as the weight is far off from a "good frame". People will comment that the welds are ugly. They are large and incredibly consistent, and did not have any of the secondary handwork that some other frame makers do to make the welds look nicer. Doesn't make them inferior, IMO. But I am not a weld expert.

I would certainly consider buying a BD, or Nashbar bike for a good price on a component set I wanted, and was very pleasantly suprized at the quality of the build of one I recently helped a friend with. He could easily recoup a good bit of his money on the groupset alone, but the frame would likely only go for a small amount of the purchase price simply because not too many people know what it is, or would be interested in having an off brand...just like so many of the posters here mention.

Not everyone has the cash to purchase an expensive bike. Jeez, give the OP a little slack for asking for advice. Perhaps you could find something constructive to add instead of smacking him down. I give the guy two thumbs up for riding again. So many people come here and say I have $X to spend and get responses pointing to bikes at twice the price.
I bet that Nashbar bike is the same "famous brand" bike that I've seen in the Performance stores. For $1k, it's probably not a bad deal. $1k seems to be the barrier to entry for road bike that is acceptable quality.
I like the color and it doesn't have branding all over the place. If you live in SF, you might be able to find that bike at a local Performance bike store.
vvvvvvvvv AAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!! There it is! Buy a $2k bike!

Bikes: a heavy old steel Frankenbike Gitane, a cruiser (not something I'd buy for myself, but it was a gift, what can you do?), a Greg Lemond, a Specialized Stumpjumper(old, steel, fully rigid), and a Specialized Safire

Not amazing, but not a bad deal if it fits. If it doesn't and you can't ride it comfortably, then the bike could turn into a money pit. You might wind up spending another hundred on new components to change up the fit, unless you have parts laying around. If you can't get the frame to fit comfortably, then you'll have to buy a new frame. Would you be switching the components over yourself, or taking it to a shop? Even if you find a good deal on a better frame, the labor costs to build it up would probably be at least $100-150, maybe more, assuming you don't end up needing to buy other new parts to fit the new frame. It's very possible that you could end up spending the same amount on upgrades as you spent on the bike initially.
Clearly, the solution is to buy a CAAD10-4. Then post it in the Cult of CAAD thread.
EDIT: In all seriousness, OP, I think it's great that you want to get back into riding, and if the CAAD10-4 really is way beyond your budget, I would ask if you've looked at year-end closeouts at your local shop(s) yet. Big frames like what you would be looking for are often the last to move.

Just because it 'comes from the same factory' doesn't mean it is the same thing without decals.
Factories are more than capable of producing products to more than one level of quality at the same time. Really. You have no idea what this frame is or how it will ride.
As everyone else mention fit trumps all.

Well, if he's thinking of spending $1,000 on a bike when he's not even sure if it fits, he could easily end up spending $1,500-2,000 for the bike and upgrades when it's all said and done, especially if he has to take it to a shop for the labor. I just mentioned the CAAD10-4 because it comes with Rival.

The frame is the same as Giant Defy 2008-2011. I have 2009 version and from the picture on Nashbar, frame looks identical.

I'd get one of these frames and figure out the cheapest way to rig it.
That S-Works would build into a unique bike that you'd want to keep inside just to look at. And when the time came to sell it, it would do well on EBay as a complete bike. The Nashbar? Not so much.

I will never understand the preoccupation with resale value. The best way to get value out of your bike is to pick one and ride it, not to trade it in.
Also, its obvious that a more expensive name-brand bike will resell for more than a no-name bike. But I've never seen any evidence whatsoever that no-name bikes resell for proportionally less than what they cost new. Spending $2000 on a name brand LBS bike and take a 20-30% loss at resale will still cost you more than a 20-30%, even a 50% loss on a $1000 no name or non-mainstream bike.

Thanks folks for your input! I'll update when I hash this out, from what I've gathered, a nashbar bike isn't all that bad!

Thats a good deal if its set up the way you want it, otherwise not worth it IMO. I'm my case, I wouldn't want the compact crankset and pie plate cassette. Plus, the sizes are limited and there really isn't enough information about the frame to evaluate how it compares to the Nashbar frame (which is also lacking information). So I can't really judge which frame is higher quality and ultimately would have to make a decision based on fit, geometry, and other parts. Also why can't I see a picture of the whole bike on the website?
Personally, I think the Nashbar bike is speced a little better where it counts. I'd rather have the Rival group with Tektro brakes that come with the Nashbar bike than 105 group and Scor brakes (what the hell are those?) that come on the BMC. Plus Nashbar has a really great no questions asked return policy. Maybe CC does to, but I have more experience dealing with Nashbar. So, hypothetically, if I were looking at these two bikes I'd choose the Nashbar bike.
