What if budding musicians asked the same questions as new cyclists?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

We all started in ignorance. When I started riding seriously (1971) cycling was nowhere near as popular. The internet did not exist so my ignorance remained comparatively hidden and as a result persisted for a much longer time. I think it is good, they ask questions and get answers instantaneously from the entire world. How cool is that.

Work in/with a Dive Shop....... Much the same experience. That being said, I enjoy helping the new guy who admits to know jack to the one that knows jack but pretends otherwise.

One of my favorite stories to tell...

Many years ago, there was another trumpet player at a rehearsal I was attending. He was older than I, and he came from a musical family that ran several music stores in the area. He seemed a bit frustrated upon hearing me play, and said that I could play the way I did only because of the particular horn I was playing. I said - ok, let me try your horn. I played the same thing and sounded the same. He then said it had to be the mouthpiece I was using. I said - give me your mouthpiece. I showed him I could sound the same on his equipment as I could on mine. He didn't talk to me for a long time after that...

Eddy Merckx should take a page out of Gibson's/Les Paul's book and start making a Tom Boonen signature model Eddy Merckx bike.

Here is the crucial difference between my two hobbies: road cycling and guitar playing. While I suck @ both, in road cycling people (particularly in racing circles) have a strange proclivity to want to get newbies to quit the hobby. It's the opposite in guitars, people are very supportive and encouraging. Why?

In cycling they figure if you quit the sport, that's one less ahole they have to ride or race against next weekend. In guitar playing, the more inept newbies that get up and play @ open mic night, the better they sound.

Well it was the beginning of the first bike boon but you ran across far far fewer stores or cyclists.

In 1971, not as much as the late 70's.

I was going to cue up some Grumpy music, but realized those old threads have been jettisoned.

Another 41 Classic. Grumpy may be guilty of many things, but non-musicality is not one of them.
