Anything higher end. The chamois in the cheaper shorts is exactly that, cheap.
For me the best bibs have been Louis Garneau Equipe.

Quests are entry level shorts. I usually suggest to people buy a cheap helmet and get a great pair of shorts because there are few more personal relationships than that between a man and his chamois. I just bought a pair of the new Bontrager RXL bibs with the flat suspender straps without the stitching for $150 bucks and they are amazing. Best feature is the straps. No more nipple tape for me.

Also I am a big fan of Voler shorts. They were my first pair of quality shorts and gotta say even after a couple years of riding they are still comfortable. Sometimes you can get a great deal through their site on closeout products.

Throw the stick!!!!
For the price it is hard to beat hammer apparel. Their bibs and shorts are awesome. If you decide to go with them there are plenty of people on this site that can give you a coupon code for a nice percentage off (I am one of those people).

Are the PI elites that much better than quest? I have a quest bib that has been good. Is the chamois just thicker or what? I did start to get a little uncomfortable on my 33 mile ride yesterday, but I'm sure my stock felt saddle contributed to that also.

www.bonktown.com has been selling LG bibs which normally go for $175-$225 for right around $75. I bought a pair of Corsa's and so far(one short ride) really like them.

as a matter of fact, just the other day, while ascending one of the many hills i encounter on a daily basis, i thought to myself, "wow, i'm saving a whole lot of money here with these cheap uncomfortable shorts, because i'm so miserable that i wouldn't know a comfortable pair of shorts from a hole in the wall right now."

+1 to "The black ones".
I don't know if guys have the same issues that women have. But man, some of those chamois feel like a )#(*%&%^ diaper. Find some short you like. If they last a long time, buy more! I don't think you have to spend a lot of money on shorts. Buy shorts in the fall when they are on sale. I wash my cycling clothes by hand (including gloves) to avoid the wear and tear of the washing machine. I don't think there is anything wrong with most $50 shorts. I really like the Ultra Performance shorts. I'm too cheap to pay $80 and I get them on sale at $60 because I have never found any that are cheaper that I like to fit. I scored a second pair last fall on the sale rack for $40. I've probably put a 2,000 miles on them and they are still fine. I don't ride commando.

The better the bib the more form fitting the pad. If you look at the two top pads in Pearl you will see significant differences in how the pads are formed and shaped.

Throw the stick!!!!
In that case the rest of what you say about cycling shorts can be disregarded.
