Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I live in Colorado and went to Florida last year to visit family who recently moved there. I remember seeing people riding who had compacts, and just laughing. How many bridges did you do?

Velo Gator is just having fun. In suburban Chicago I also sought out expressway overpasses for "climbs". In east TN I climb that much in my driveway. Hehe.

I don't know how or why your Floridians stick with this stupid sport, but I gotta hand it to you.

A "climbing ride" with 427 feet of gain and loss translates to "a three mile bike ride".

Weather for Golden Col tomorrow, 38 snow. Weather for Jacksonville tomorrow 65 sunny.

That, summer sea breezes and miles of bike lane along the ocean, are some compensation for the lack of hills.

The past couple of weeks we have been having pretty windy weather. Headwinds while climbing are HORRIBLE.

I didn't mean to make it sound like one place was better than the other. What I have here is variety, but of course, the low-end of that variety is watching TV while riding the trainer in the basement. There's a silver lining to living and riding almost anywhere.

Compacts are illegal in Florida, as are cassettes with more than 25 tooth cogs........

VeloGator, you've used up your instigator points for the week.

..on Thursday night I was climbing the bridge in my small ring, biggest rear cog and wishing badly for more gears. A compact would've come in handy.

I did a century ride last spring on Maryland's eastern shore, and ended up with 197 feet of climbing. I was hoping to hit a few more speed bumps and curb cuts to push it over 200, but it didn't happen...

Wow! Sorry to hear about your broken power meter. It's a bummer, too, 'cause those things aren't cheap.

Heh there's a local randonneur like that. Super tall and super wide. Drafting him is like riding in a vacuum. Too bad he's a bit slow.

Having ridden in Florida (Sarasota) I can attest to the annoying head winds that I seemed to have no matter which way I headed. No hills but still you can get some good training in there.
Velo, I know how you feel about the big ring and feeling good. I know when I'm feeling like crap when on a particular part of my training ride i can't climb the short but steep hill in the big ring.

I used to ride Magnolia Road in Boulder, CO which covers 2000' in just 4 miles. Every other year it's included in the Mike Horgan Memorial Hill Climb starting in Boulder, CO at 5400' and ending 21 miles away in the Eldora ski area parking lot at 9150' with 4100 feet between. One year I did Ride The Rockies from Grand Junction to Golden which covered 30,000 vertical feet in the 418 miles including classics like Grand Mesa (5700' on I70) and Loveland Pass (only 2600' over 8.7 miles, but it peaks at 11,990' above sea level). Colorado is a very nice place to live.

Based on your graph, it looks like it was over 7 days, right? Have a link to that "tour"??

Did a nice "base" ride today. I threw a few climbs in but it still wasn't a climbing ride.

On the West coast, we can have it both ways. Ride along the ocean on the Coast Range so you don't need to sacrifice hills to get a sea view.

Warm weather will wussify you. The more of every kind of condition you get, the better.
