Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New bike build... don't flame me!

The day has arrived. Almost all of the parts are in. This is where I'll be living for the next while. I am STOKED!
The frame is a 2011 Roubaix Pro.
I'll be installing SRAM Rival (except for the front derailleur, its a Force, error in the shipping). EDIT: I'm assuming it's an error; maybe they had no more Rival FD's left.
The wheels are Fuzion M1
The close-ups will give you an idea of the colors I'm going for; the seat and handbar tape will be black. White would be crisper, but gets dirty too fast.
Yes, the yellow stickers will be removed.

I do have a question. The frame doesn't come with an integrated headset (it looks integrated to me anyways).
This is the definition on Specialized's website:

"Headset: 1-1/8" upper and 1-3/8" lower Cr-Mo cartridge bearings w/ 20mm carbon cone spacer and 20mm of carbon spacers"

Could I ask someone to recommend a brand and model headset that would fit? I went to Chris King and FSA, but this is beyond me at this point.
Yes, you can flame me for not knowing this, but only if you make a good recommendation in return.

I would install the seatpost immediately and then clamp the seatpost instead of the downtube. But that's just me.

I thought all Roubaix frames came with a matching tapered fork. What happened to the fork?

EDIT: Okay, much better. Renamed the source file and re-uploaded. Screw you, temp file.

Regarding the headset. I think your best bet is your Specialized LBS. I do NOT like these funky tapered designs.

Nice bike. Enjoy. By the way, my Roubaix sports a Thomson Elite setback and looks great.

If you don't have it, you may want to get some carbon assembly paste and a bike specific torque wrench.

Have fun.

Hmmm... this headset stuff looks more complicated than i thought! lol

Why the setback seatpost? Is it to resolve a fit issue?

Can't wait for this build man. Are your cranks w/ Black chainrings?

I'm waiting for some parts for my build too. I'm doing a Rival although I'm going to run Red cranks w/ Black chainrings. I just like the way they look and I know eventually I'll feel the itch to upgrade (getting a good deal helps too).

I'm getting impatient but I always have to remind myself that April is the EARLIEST I can ride my project bike and it's only January. It sucks living in the East Coast.

and we won't flame you unless you make 2-3 more threads of this build. Keep it to one thread

Hey BC
Yes to black cranks and chainrings - all black. The only silver will be the FD but they are always mostly silver.
Have fun with your build, too! Red and black will be very attractive and quite awesome.
Same here, April will be the earliest so I'm going to make this project last as long as possible to keep me out of trouble. lol
More pics to come, have the headset figured out, just need to buy the tools.
Great fun, isn't it?!

lol yup, there are 4 bottles there and another 4 bottles somewhere else in that room. They were less than $5 each and the wide-top type so I bought a couple more.

I noticed my shop takes my seat post out and uses an aluminum one to attach to the stand. Good luck with the bike.

Yes. I have 5-24 oz and 5-20oz bottles myself. I use the hell out of my water bottles. Might just buy a whole display case full

xfi, the build is going to come out amazing. Those Williams wheels match your bike perfectly. I too recommend using the seatpost instead of the seat stay to clamp the bike. Tapered headsets definitely make things A LITTLE more difficult. The frame/fork seriously didnt come with a headset? Even though it came with cones and stacks? Weird. I would say go to a spesh dealer and just order their s-works headset.

On the headset question, you still might want to confirm with Spec. that this frame doesn't use their (stupid) proprietary 'Mindset' set up; it probably doesn't. If it doesn't, Cane Creek should certainly be able to supply the correct headset w/correctly sized bearings.

The headset bearings aren't already pressed into the frame?

Did you buy this as a frameset from Specialized?

Just the frame and fork, found on Spec's demo b2b site via an LBS. The lbs is going to call Spec and see if they have a seatpost and binder lying around. Not having those last 2 pieces and the integrated headset was a disconnect between the lbs and me; i kept using the word "frameset" and he used "frame". Given that its my duty as a buyer to know what i'm buying, i take responsibility for not getting a written inventory of what the frame consists of. The lbs on his side is good enough to call Spec to see what he can do to get a seapost and binder. So far its been a very good transaction.

Thanks for the heads up on Cane Creek. So far i've been through their sizing and using the 2010 Roubaix Pro, I have chosen a 40.is42 tall cover top and a 40.zs49 bottom. I will call CC tomorrow to make sure i havent messed up lol. I also enjoy being able to buy from Cane Creek as opposed to going Spec LBS and waiting 1-2 weeks for parts; I am not that patient.

I'm going to build my own crown race setter tool using a pvc pipe with a cap and build my own press tool using a threaded rod, washers and bolts. I find some of those Park Tools to be way over-priced.

I'll periodically post things up as I go. My next challenge now is installing the internal cabling!

I've got a home-built PVC crown race setter and threaded rod headset press myself and they do work, but not optimally. I would never ever in a million years take my headset press to an expensive frame; it doesn't keep everything perfectly square throughout the operation.

Your LBS should be able to set that crown race in about 5 seconds, and should also have a headset press that will do the job correctly in a little more time than that. I'd have them do the job with the right tools on that frame.

You know what, that makes more sense. I'm pretty dedicated to being independent from LBS', but this one would make sense. Now just have to find one that wont give me attitude because i didnt buy it from them (the lbs i bought the frame from is out of state).
