BTW- It's customary to take the weight of the smallest frame within a series...

Actually most of the sites and articles/test I see talk about weights with a note on that size. For example, here is Cannondale saying weight is based on a 56cm

http://www.cannondale.com/2012/bikes...d/supersix-evo

EDIT: As I posted I saw the Calfee reference and remembered they list weights too. Here they quote weight for a 54 cm

http://www.calfeedesign.com/products/dragonfly/

I think you might be a little heavy on your CF - my Cervelo which is the heavier, more aero frame, weighs 16 lbs exactly built with D/A, Zipp 303 clinchers, SPD-SL pedals, cages, etc. I think most CF bikes with pedals should easily be under 16 lbs

Please note correction. Thank you!

Google "Fastrax S3" - which was a series of unsold and rebadged Salsa Primeros that some member here was selling last year. I understand he kept one for himself. True Temper S3 tubing and the cost was very reasonable. I think he claimed his Dura Ace 8 equipped bike weighed in under 18 pounds.

I ride an (original to me) 1999 Schwinn Peloton Reynolds 853 frame with aluminum straight blade fork, Ultegra 6500. I used to race it but mostly train on it. I did just road race it last year and it's still a very capable and fast bike and comfortable to ride all day long.

Yep, I also had a 1999 Schwinn Circuit with the Reynolds 853 and aluminum fork. Great bike for me. Sold it when I picked up the Kona solely for the reason that I could not justify a need for 3 road bikes, a CX bike and a MB. Since the triple equipped Schwinn was getting the least use I sold it. But when on a business trip for the whole month of May it was the only bike I took and served quite well for daily rides of anywhere from 30 to 50 miles.

Icarus Frames recently built a steel race rig for a guy that rides in my area. He used columbus life megatubes you can check it out here. http://www.icarusframes.com/2239084/Chris-s-Road-Racer

I know nothing about steel, so I emailed my friend in Tokyo who is a retired Pro Keirin rider, and asked him what the choice is here by the pro riders. Most pros here use Kaisei 8630 R tubing. I might add that the rule here in Japan is that if an NJS bike is crashed, it can never be raced again. Interesting.

Great looking bike...

I don't see any weld or brazed points here!

I really like those Torelli 30 year special edition frames. It is quite pricy at 3500.00 USD though.

I'd be lining up for a custom steel made specifically for me long before I dropped that sort of coin on an off the rack, even a 'special edition'. FireFly does a full stainless custom for about the same price, Kirk's JK-Special which is a blend of 953 Stainless, S3 and custom drawn (for him by Reynolds) stays, is in that same ball park as well.

This one (JK-Classic, horizontal top tube) is at Joe Bell's waiting for paint:

That's the first Waterford I've seen with a sloping TT.

Many of the Waterford 33-Series bikes built in the last several years have sloping top tube geometry (they're TIG welded, so not constrained by lug angles).

That's why I went with an off-the-shelf Countach for less than half that price

StanSeven 01-27-12 04:56 PM

Thanks for pointing that out. Their website doesn't have many picturesof the 33 series and I guessed I missed that before.

Makes me want to get one - saw one built up including pedals for 16.4 lbs and another at 15.8 without pedals.

DRietz 01-27-12 06:33 PM

Posted many times before, but I like to show it off. This is the bike I race - a touch over 16lbs with race wheels on.

Tange Prestige double butted front and rear triangles, incredibly steep geometry.

Nice looking! I like the white frame (and bar tape) plus all black.

weaver 01-27-12 06:39 PM

Funny I was just searching for a picture of your bike this last 10 minutes so I could PM you as I'm almost certain I'm going to be picking up one of the Soma frames shortly here. Wanted to ask what size yours is? On the fence between a 60 and a 62. I have the geo chart printed out, helps to visually see the frame though.

DRietz 01-27-12 06:46 PM

I ride the virtual 56cm frame - the headtube measures ~153mm after facing.

I really liked the paint too, until I got it relatively scratched that last time I shipped UPS.

It's now stripped and ready for clear powder.
