Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

just started using an edge 500

Do I need to connect the edge 500 to my computer to check avg watt, speed and cadence?

I was able to check these directly on my cateye before.

Thanks

You can create a free account at Garmin Connect and/or Strava. That will allow you to graphically view your rides. It's the whole point of getting an expensive gps that stores data points every 1 second. Plug it in and it will show up as a disk (just like a camera does) and you can access the Activities folder and copy it to your computer and also upload. This also charges your 500.

Enjoy!

You can set up 3 pages of maximum 8 data fields each with whatever data you want.
That's 24 fields total if you want.
Personally I've set up the first page with instant in-ride data and the second page with after-ride average data.
Obviously ... if you see the data afterwards on a computer you'll have a lot more options than on the tiny device.

You also have garmin training center for your pc or mac. This is an alternative to garmins online connect. I have the training center for mac and also set up a connect account so I can keep all of the info to view later. the edge itself will store all of your data as long as you save it after each ride.

anybody think the garmin 500 needs more RAM or CPU power? it literally took 5 minutes for it to load last ride's info on the device. we're in 2012, the last year. not 1992.

Really, I always thing my Edge500 is fast when I pull files off. A few seconds and it's in Training Peaks or uploaded to Garmin or Strava. You should have seen how slow my yellow PowerTap CPU was at downloading the data from it.

No although averages aren't that interesting.

Average power without zeroes where you recover over-estimates the impact of an effort. With zeroes and varying efforts it can underestimate them because training stress is proportional to the square of power. Coggan's normalized power and Skiba's bike score work but NP hasn't been added to the 500 firmware yet (probably after the power pedals are released).

Average cadence on the road without zeroes still reflects decelerations and accelerations.

You still want to feed the data to a program like Golden Cheetah (free, runs on windows/linux/mac), WKO+, etc.

Mine takes quite a while to download data also. A little annoying but I just toggle to the '41 during the process.

This is probably because you have it filled with previous activites. You can delete them from device/Garmin/Activities. Speeds up upload to gconnect etc a lot.

Move you past activities off the devices every so often. It speeds up dramatically. Don't delete them.

1: Don't gripe about the unit if you don't know which "upgrade" it needs. Garmin wouldn't use flash for virtual memory, so if it's running but running slow, the only cause would be insufficient CPU and/or less-than-stellar data handling in the code.

2: Increasing either of those variables will increase the power draw, shortening the battery life. I for one don't want less battery life.

i dont understand your post. are you bagging on garmin? or did you provide a solution? i cant figure out what your post is supposed to mean other than battery life.

I'm saying that more RAM wouldn't help. More CPU might, but there'd be a battery life tradeoff as a result.

Recently my Edge 500 was taking quite a long time to upload to Strava (which seems slower than Garmin Connect). I cleared my old ride history, and now it seems to find and upload much faster.

Have you just got the 1 ride in the history on the Garmin? I gets pretty slow if you have a bunch of rides stored. Clearing the history makes it load almost instantly for a few days on mine.

What is "long"?
Sure, it takes up to 20-30 seconds to upload my rides ...
Who cares?
Who said you have to keep waiting?
While it's uploading my rides I come and check on Bike Forums
