Cape Argus Cycle Race
Anyone going?
Or - does anyone have experience of this ride as an international rider (i.e. from outside South Africa)?
I heard some time ago that bike rentals were available - does anyone know about these? I obviously don't want to ship a bike from the USA.
Some info about the ride:

I'd have thought there would be moire info here on BF regarding a 70-mile race that is one of the biggest in the world with +31,000 cyclists, and past participation by the likes of Indurain and Armstrong.

Hello Duncan
This is obviously a late reply, so no good for the 2012 event, but maybe for next year.
Excellent event. I did it for the first time this year as an international rider. Very well organised. Very festive, before, during and after!
If you are considering the 2013 event, it is very important that you do enter as a international rider and not just as a Pedal Pusher Association (PPA) member. This is to do with your allocated starting time. The organizers try to seed the riders so you are riding with similar levels. The later the start the harder you will find it. This is not only to do with the level of riders, but also potential heat and wind.
I cant help you with bike rental ideas as I took my own bike. I do remember seeing a few rental suggestions on the event website.
Cheers

Rick,
Many thanks for your feedback - I'm glad you enjoyed it!
As it turned out I was in S.A. for a completely different reason, and actually left on the day of the Argus. There absolutely was no way I would have been able to make it - despite having registered as an international, and having arranged a rental bike (a Giant with a 105 groupset). So near, yet so far...
I'm definitely looking to do it next year, though! Let's keep in touch...

its a little late for a reply - but I did ride the race as an international rider, though I was residing in Pretoria at the time. It's a fantastic race, but you have to qualify.
shipping your bike is easy with a bike carrier, though you can contact any reputable bike shop in CapeTown (though do so months in advance) to rent a good bike. arrive a few days early, acclimate to the beautiful weather, clear air, and great people!
