Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2012 Campagnolo Super Record 11

I'm thinking (almost certain) of getting a 2012 Campagnolo Super Record 11 group for my build. I know there's issues with all groups e.g. Sram, Dura Ace etc... But I'd like to see if any of you who are actually running it has experienced any "inherent" issues thus far.
Thanks

@ Ruskko, it's not WAY over priced, just shop smart like you would with any purchase. Plus when you factor in it's reliable and re-buildible.
As an added note, I was a HUGE Shimano fanboy...until I rode Campangolo. There is just something to it and the way that it performs under load that makes it special.

I'm a DA guy actually. I'm getting the SR group for $1800 w/o brakes. Anyhow, I was wondering about mechanical issues but I guess there mustn't be very many or i would see them here. I figured SR was the best and I wanted to make this build nice.

Campy 11 speed is known to be more difficult to adjust properly. Which makes sense since there is another cog on the cassette.

Go for it! I've heard the difficult to adjust thing all over the Internet, but never from anyone in real life. Maybe it's the mechanic and not the equipment. . .

The only issue I have heard of is that the FD clamps have been snapping. Two or three of my friends have had it happen in recent months and I've heard of a few other instances online.

That said, I believe that frame uses a braze on FD, so that would not be an issue for you.

who is this "known" to? anyone who tells you it's harder to set-up is a bad mechanic, it's no more difficult to set-up than any 9 or 10-sp system.

i'm running record and chorus 11 on two different bikes. they have been flawless. over 5k miles on the chorus bike. just changed the chain, havent adjusted the drivetrain at all since the initial set-up.

That's interesting. My 2011 Record FD clamp snapped. I assume I overtightened it.

I briefly tried to justify 2012 SR last week when a very good deal came my way. But with EPS, it doesn't make sense for me. I expect by this time next year, I will have upgraded to EPS.

There is nothing difficult in adjusting it. It's no different than 10sp or 9sp or even 8sp was.

I agree with JoelS and Angry Scientist. There seems to be this enduring myth that it's harder to set up Campy properly. If you're even a mediocre mechanic (and I'm no more than mediocre), you can adjust the derailleurs so you get flawless and predictable shifting. I have over 17,000 miles on my mixed 11 speed group (Chorus shifters and FD, Record RD, and SR crankset), and the only time I ever had shifting problems is when I finally wore out the big chainring.

Yeah... 11 speed has been FAR easier to adjust than 6700 Ultegra. Chorus on two bikes, they both shift like a dream, little adjustment. 6700 on the other hand... eff that.

Same here. Two bikes with Campy components. No problems, except I think one bike has a slightly bent derailleur hanger. (I gotta check that, but it's working acceptably with a quick cable adjustment.). I've put on about 10K miles with no adjustments, save for when the derailleur cables were replaced (and the subsequent adjustment after cable stretch).

I'm not a great mechanic, but my question for those who say Campy is more difficult is this: What about the components are essentially different so that adjustment would be essentially any different than Shimano. Or Sram for that matter.

I have a 2011 SR group. I don't think they changed anything for 2012. I'm happy with it but did have a couple of problems.

When I first got it after about 500 miles I started to get a little creak from the crank. I took it out and reinstalled it with teflon tape on the bb threads. It started making noise again after 100 miles. I took it out again and just packed the hell out of the bearing cups with heavy synthetic grease. Its been quiet ever since.

My other problem is the chain is noisy. Its not an adjustment but just the nature of the chain. It seems to make the most noise when the chain line is straightest. I have tried different lubes with no luck. I think Ill try a chorus or kmc chain when I replace it.

You will need a special chain tool for the 11 speed campagnolo chain. The park brand one is the cheapest at $90 and the campagnolo one is $180.

I have noticed that cable adjustment is a bit more finicky than my shimano 10 speed bike or 8 speed campy bike. It seem like 1/4 of a turn on the barrel adjuster is the difference between perfect shifting and a little off. I often find myself giving my downtube barrel adjusters a little tweak mid ride.

You should run your shift cables on the outside bends of your handlebars if you can. Some people have issues with friction when running the cables on the inside.

Yes, that's what I was saying. There are also a few reviews out there that say the same thing (by reputable magazines or websites).

Also, you are limited in your crankset selection.

If you don't mind the cost or replacing the chains and cassettes, I'm sure it's a great gruppo. Campy makes quality parts

I am riding 2011 SR 11 speed. I figured that if I was already spending a lot to get 11 speed, I may as well get SR instead of Record. It is on my Colnago C50. I installed the group myself except for the chain. I have had no adjustment issues in 1800 miles of riding.
